how long after a torn muscle?

i have torn my calf muscle. how long before i can run again?
long background explanation follows if you can be bothered to read it. feel free to ignore it and reply 'tomorrow - you'll be fine'.

i started running again a couple of weeks ago (i have not run for two years. i have previously run a number of times for a few months at a time, but always get out of the habit because of injury or work commitments).

for the first time ever, i went and got a pair of shoes fitted properly before going for a run. they felt amazing.

i ran twice, for three miles each time on paved road (i tried to run some of the time on grass but it is crazily uneven). not sure if that was too much straight off but it felt good and i was not going hard. i could feel some tightness at the top of my achilles tendon after the first run. three days later, when i ran again, it still felt tight, and started to hurt after 1.5 miles. i stopped, stretched, and then walked for a bit. it went back to being tight, so i continued running.

it still felt tight, so i put heat on it the next day, massaged and stretched. and then ran up the stairs at work the following day and felt it tear.

could not walk/flex it for 4 days; 2 weeks later it feels ok but the muscle is still tight and hard.

what comes next?

Re: how long after a torn muscle?
Pain will be your guide, but if you start too quickly you will reinjure yourself (that's what I kept doing). My Level II tear took about 12 weeks to be completely healed.

It's hard to say how long it will take, because the severity will affect the time to recover. Yopu do need to be stretching it gently, and maybe doing light calf exercises. Do both straight leg & bent knee stretches.

Once you are pain-free walking, you can do very slow jogging. I had to make myself do less than I thought I should to keep from reinjuring myself. I never had a full-on tear again, but I would regress about 2 to 3 weeks.

Deep massage is said to work. I would sit in a hot tub for a while & then try to massage deep into the muscle.

Good luck!

It took me about 8 weeks before I could even think about a slow jog. Even then, there was some pain and I had to go VERY slow. Deep tissue massage was the answer for me. I went to a physical therapist and I also did it myself. It was extremely painful and I had some ugly bruising, but I felt my calf loosen up after each session.

I had a pretty bad tear that I was anxious to get over. I walked before I was really allowed to walk, I ran before I was allowed to run. I ran before I was ready to run.

To be honest, I'd say 8-10 weeks minimum.

Coming off it too soon can really mess you up. Raises hand

Hey, don't sweat it. It's all in how you look at it.

When I was "out of commission," I looked at it all wrong... I even slipped into a bit of a depression!! Looking back at that, I wish I would have just worked more with what I had and been happy that it wasn't worse. Find some cardio exercises that won't hurt your injury, pick up some well deserved R&R, and enjoy life. There are more ways to enjoy life and be reminded that you're alive than a heart pounding run.

Just don't dwell on it. If anything, coming out of it, you will appreciate your health and gift of running more so. But don't dwell, every moment in your life you spend upset over something is a moment you can never get back to be happy..

Re: how long after a torn muscle?
It sounds like you've got a level 2 calf tear at least; if massage therapy is out of the question, I think the typical stuff is in order: RICE, and then stretching and strengthening.

Don't come back to soon, but don't be reluctant to get in other stuff that may help you out in your running down the road - when I was sidelined last year with ITBS, I got in a whole bunch of core and swimming work. That's continued until now, and I'm looking at dipping into triathlons some time later this year. Good luck!

Re: how long after a torn muscle?
When I tore my calf muscle I was out for 14 weeks. It was almost a complete tear.

2 weeks off my feet. 5 more on crutches and seven weeks of physical therapy. PT was great. It got me back to almost normal.

With a major muscle injury you will never be 100% again. The scar tissue can be broken up but the tear is still there and it will always remind you of it.

It wouldn't hurt to see a Orthopedic Doctor to be sure of the level of injury.
