Alcohol injections for Morton's Neuroma

Hi, I have Morton's Neuroma, have had a cortisone shot & got new orthotics that have not helped much. I think I am going to move on to try the alcohol injections. If you have had these, how long do they hurt? The cortisone shot hurt quite a bit & I didn't walk or run at all for 2-3 days. I'm so frustrated, I want to continue my C25K training (I'm on week 5) but also want to get the neuroma taken care of!

My Doc added a bump to my orthotics which he said cures 75% of the people. It's been about 3 weeks now and it is+ definitely helping. I was told if that didn't work that we may eventually get to the alcohol shot which he said was "fairly" painless. When it kills the nerves your affected toes will be numb but I understand that you get used to that very quickly.

Also I have changed shoes from Saucony (which I have worn since '83) to Salomon. These have a wider toe box which is mandatory for curing MN.

Good Luck!

Have you consulted with a physiotherapist that "specializes" in feet? I also have a morton's neuroma which wasn't responding to my orthotics (and numerous adjustments made to them). I could only run 20 minutes tops before problems set in. When I saw the PT, he did the most thorough exam of my feet, calf muscle flexibility and running style. He diagnosed me as having an immobile cuboid joint, which was compounding the problem with the neuroma. After about 3 months of physio, things have improved greatly. I still have the neuroma, but now the othotics are doing what they were made to do, and I can run a lot longer.

I just had another alcohol/cortosone injection yesterday for my neuroma (he has done 2, but I have had a total of 4 injections from someone else also.) My foot is very sore today, but I am going to try to ride my bike anyway. I keep telling him my goal is to run again. According to my pod, the alcohol injections are partly cortizone, partly alcohol, and after a few injections it is basically all alcohol. I really think you'd be better off getting rid of the neuroma completely before running again, or you may end up with a worse condition like I did. As far as PT, I have given it up. It wasn't helping at all. Good luck!

There is another discussion on neuromas. I'll bump it up.
