Collapsed Arch

The arch in my one foot collapse in April, and I've since then got it 90% better. It likes to ache now and then. I have to use arch supports in all my shoes. Walking around the house seems harder on it than running. Just wondering those of you who have delt with this how long before it was no longer a problem? Did you do special exercises for it? I saw a podiatrist months back but he just yelled at me for being a runner.

I'm surprised that your podiatrist didn't give you orthotics. You'd wear them all day, even in the house.

You might want to ask around and see if you can find a podiatrist who is a runner (mine is!)

Edited to add -- I see you're in Minnesota! My podiatrist is Dr. Joyce, in Roseville. If you want a second opinion, you might want to give him a call.

Hey Bugs! I didn't realize your foot problem was from from a collapsed arch. I never had much arch in either of my feet, but my right arch completely went away/collapsed after I broke my foot a couple of year ago. I have had some tendonitis problems on that side and found that wearing shoes around the house (just an old pair of runners) worked wonders. If I were you I'd give that a try before shelling out for orthotics.

Aslo, are you doing any exercises to strengthen your feet/arch?

Usually an arch will collapse because the posterior tibialis tendon tears. It won't fix itself, no matter what. I'd see another doctor, maybe even an orthopedits if you can't find a podiatrist who is knowledgable about sports injuries.

The physical therapist thought also that the posterior tibialis tendon teared also. So if it doesn't fit itself, what do they usually do?

They can repair it surgically.

jansd, that is not what I wanted to hear. My family doc says this podiatrist likes to do surgery. Do you know if people usually go back to running well again after surgery?

<HR>

I really have no idea. I had a slight irritationof this tendon that was related to another injury, so I did some research on it at the time. No matter what, get at least one more opinion before considering surgery and make sure all your questions are answere to your satisfaction. Good luck.

Bugs,

Sorry to hear about your foot trouble. Hopefully it will get better. I have no arches, so can't relate...
