serious knee injury, please read if you have had one

im going to try and be very concise and succinct, as i tend to ramble non-stop.

ok, i am a beginner, but a crazy addicted beginner, if you will. or at least i was. on july 4th, i was involved in an "incident". this incident led to the ER, then to surgery, then to a full length blackcast. so you may be thinking, "what happened", well, heres what happened. i was going toward the entrance of wild oats grocery mart with very samll buggy in tow. there was some asphalt construction being done right in front of the entrance. i dint think anything about and proceeded to roll right over it. well, that dint happen. i got stuck in the bumpy milled asphalt and got tripped up and literally flipped over the buggy and fell directly onto my kneecap. it was like a scene in jackass.

anyways, i broke my kneecap in so many places they had to cut off the lower portion, and attach the patella ligament up higher onto the bone that was left. so here enters my question.

has anybody ever had a serious knee injury like this? if so, were you able to run again? if you can run, is it way painful? did i buy my new mizunos for nothing? am i totally screwed? i really loved running and i was in the best shape since high school right before , the injury. in fact, i had ironically entered my first 5K the night before.

if anyone can give any helpful information, i would greatly appreciate it. i am currently gimped up without work and would love to hear any stories of recovery. i dont want my running career to be over.

thanks
mjf

If you have the willpower you can do it. Plenty of runners have been able to keep running through far more traumatic injuries. Be patient and steadfast and you'll run again, maybe not the same distance/speed, but you can get out there.

It sounds like a very painful injury and tough and painful recovery.

My wife has/had very bad patella in both knees along with arthritis. Through her younger years both knees had disintegrating patella. One got so bad, about 30 years ago she had an operation to remove the patella completely tying the patella ligament to the quadricep tendon above. She was in a full leg cast for 6 to 8 weeks before she could start any kind of therapy. Needless to say it took some time to get her back on her feet again. Discounting the arthritis and the mice (floating pieces of the patella they weren't able to recover), I'd say her knee has functioned fairly normally.

I remember physical therapy was tough and painful and her PT basically telling her, she just had to suck it up and work through the pain......the harder she worked the faster and better the recovery would be.

Don't give up..... work hard on your recovery and therapy and I'm sure you'll be back to running.

You have a right to be really upset and depressed. Of course things could always be worse, like you say, but does that help your cause?? No way. Thinking about it like that will only make you feel worse. So go ahead and have a pity party for yourself because it DOES totally suck for you and you have the right to be pretty freaking bummed right now. But let's have the party, and then let's move on. You have to think positive. Your outcome could be great, you never know. Turn your negative energy into something positive and fight for your health. Throw it into your rehab and recovery. Then focus it into running again. Best of luck to you. Keep on movin' and get back out there!
