how long can I take off and still run marathon

Hi,

I've been experiencing minor injuries throughout my marathon training and have recently had to take off running here and there. I've already missed 3 long runs, and my marathon is scheduled on October 21st. I'm wondering now if I should just plan on not running that marathon and focus either on a spring marathon or wait until next year. If I can get back into my running schedule this week with no pain, can I still run that marathon and expect to do well? I wanted to try and qualify for Boston, but now I'm thinking that's not realistic. Any thoughts? How long is the most time you've taken off during a marathon and still been able to run well?

Thanks in advance!

Re: how long can I take off and still run marathon
Thanks for posting this question. I've just landed in pretty much the same situation and I don't know what to do. My marathon is Sept 15th, and I too want to BQ. I've stayed injury free until last week. But, now I'm having some ankle issues that I'm working out with my Dr. I've felt really good about my training and feel that I'm in excellent shape, but I'm wondering what taking a week or two off 4-5 weeks before the race will do. I was able to run one of two scheduled 20 mile long runs before the injury. The second is schedule for this weekend, but I don't think my ankle will be up to it. But, I'm hoping it will be ready for the race. Any thoughts and previous experiences would be appreciated.

Hi
If it is of any consulation to you - last year 2006 I was training for NY Marathon when in July I went over so badly on my ankle that I pulled the nerves leading into my ankle and was off all running for 6 weeks, during that time I got into the pool swimming with a pull buoy between my legs so that I would not have to kick and upset the injury but kept up my fitness as I improved I did a few weeks of aqua-running, got back training mid-august only had sept/oct to get back to long runs and went on to do 3:18 in NY Marathon, always think that there are always parts of your body you can train even when injured!!
Best of Luck.

If you've been having "minor injuries" all along, and have recently had to miss 3 long runs I think you'd be wise to target another marathon than the one in October -- especially if you're wanting to do well in that marathon and not just go out and run it for fun. To perform at your best in an event like a marathon really requires lots of pieces of the puzzle to fall into place and it sounds like some major ones (your health) aren't in place.

Thanks Kelllygirl, the Dr. seemed very positive. I'll see him again on Friday and find out more. I think I'll be able to run mine in Sept. but I don't think I'll qualify. It was a long shot and depended on all the "pieces of the puzzle to fall into the right spot". This one didn't, but that's OK. So far it looks like I'll be able to run it and I'll do the best I can and I'll be happy with that.

Thanks murielrunning for the advice: "Always think that there are always parts of your body you can train even when injured". That's the approach I'm going to take.

Good luck Kellygirl with your healing and training! Take care of yourself!

You may not finish fast, but why not just run it for a finish/fun run. ...or why not just run it to bq and see what happens? What's the worst that could happen? You quit. Not the end of the world. You make things worse? Plenty of time to recover in the off season. What's the best that might happen
? You bq. I'd say go for it.

I have a plantar fibroma, stress fracture and the doc told me no more running. We agreed on two runs per week, one long, one med.

I plan on running my fall marathon anyway. While a pr isn't at all likely in my case, finishing is doable, so I'll just enjoy the day.

Re: how long can I take off and still run marathon
Your story it is a mirror image of mine! I was training for my second mara on Oct 28th and got a niggling foot injury a couple of weeks ago. tried to run through it, it cleared up but then the other foot start troubling me. I too have only run one marathon with no problems. I can only surmise that a second marathon 6 mths after the first is too much for my poor old (48yr old gulp!) body. I have decided to flag this year and aim for NY next year. The only consolation is that there are thousands of runners out there that have been through what we are going through and they are still out there doing it so there must be some hope.......................
