Torn Hamstring Tendon - Upcoming Race

Hello everyone and Good Morning! My name is Kristen and I am 41 (almost 42) and I'm hoping to get some feedback and suggestions.

To give you some of my background, I've been running for about 2 1/2 years now and have trained for several races to include 5k, 8k, 10k and two 1/2 marathons, (7 races total since October of 2005 with the 8th one coming up this weekend). I

Anywho, in May I just completed my second half marathon and during the training for this I started to have some pain and discomfort in the hamstring area, with rest and ice I was able to tolerate the discomfort. On June 18th my hamstring actually 'tore' during an 8K race. I had an MRI with the diagnosis "Intermediate grade torn hamstring tendon".
I just finished a month of rehab and have gradually been working my way up to 6 miles with walk/jog increments, basically around an 11 mile/minute pace. (2 minutes slower than my last 1/2 marathon pace).

Here is my dilema. I am registered to run in our local 10 mile race this Saturday and I had planned since the injury to walk/jog this race, but now I'm getting a little gunshy being that I"ve only worked my way up to 6 miles and I'm still experiencing some soreness. This is my very first injury related to running, so I'm not sure if I should push it even at a slow pace?

Sorry I typed a book here! I appreciate any thoughts and comments!

Have a great day!
Kristen

Kristen, I'll weigh in with my 2 cents worth... I don't think it's a good idea for you to enter the race this weekend. You've been following a sensible progression following a MAJOR injury and you've been making progress. Why risk a set back and potentially a long period off running by pushing your distance from 6 to 10 in one whack? A hamstring tear is a major injury and will take lots of time to heal. Your road to recovery is just begun, don't risk sidelining yourself again! Janet

IF you can treat the 8K as a fun run/workout with a bunch of friends AND you do it at the same pace you've been working at... you might be OK. But only you can judge if you have the discipline to not get sucked into doing a faster pace because of the crowd. If you're not sure - cheer from the sidelines and be safe!
