Big Toe, Big Problem?

I'm doing c25k and overcame a recurring shinsplint in my left shin by breaking in slowly. Now that we've stepped up milage to 20 mins of running, I'm getting pain in my right big toe. I have a flat arch on my right foot, which probably contributed to the shin splint and maybe the toe pain. I may have just traded pain in my shin for pain in my toe. Should I try to run through it? How do you treat toe pain from running?

Assuming that you are in the correct type of running shoe (stability / motion control) already, then the typical solution is an orthodic. This will provide additional support and/or cushioning and better distribute load across the foot, i.e. the assumption being that a disproportionate amount of load is going through your big toe. Whether that'll end up being a relatively inexpensive off-the shelf product or a $300 custom orthodic is another matter. Many folks have success with the former after a little googling and a visit to their local running speciality store. However; a visit to the podiatrist is always good idea where you should receive an expert assessment and appropriate solution.

Did they watch you run as well as walk? Either way, hopefully the new shoes work out for you.
