Knee Pain. Is it serious?

About 2-3 years ago, I started to have sharp hip pains when I walked. Everything else seemed to be ok. I figured I would just run through it and it would be ok. After a few months I started to develop a pinpoint pain on the inside of my knee towards the knee cap, but not necessarily next to it. So i went to see an OS and they did some x-rays and I got an MRI. After looking at the pictures they came to the conculsion that there was no miniscus tear and that everythign looked about normal. She daignosed me with a muscle imbalance, that my quads were substantially too weak which is highly visible on my leg. The pain was typically pin-pointed but as the time went on it gradually started to be come aching from INSIDE my joint, almost like an arthritis type feeling. Meanwhile I cut down my running to about 8 miles a week from the tyical 16-17. Thats about all I ever ran thoughtout my time. The aching pain inside my knee soon got so horrible, that it would wake me up at night. So I stopped running and everything immediately went away. It wasn't until about 1 month later it flared up again, only this time I hadn't ran all. My knee feels incrediably weak as though im standing on a wobbly stilt. I had went to physical thearopy for about 3 months prior to when I stopped running and it seemed to help only minimally. So here I am a year or 2 later and I am in horrible knee pain again. I am a college student and even sitting in class I have to constantly move my leg because of the pain. It hurts the longer Ive been on it, say standing on concrete for a long period of time. I have an appt. with another OS here in about a week to see what he has to say. I do about 3 quad excercises here at home to help strengthin it but I have also had minimal results.
Can ANYONE tell me if they have had this problem, as is it a bad sign that the entire knee aches?? Anyone else had a similar problem?

Thanks, Mark.

I'm 24 and a college student too. I've been dealing with knee pain behind/below the patella of my right leg for about four months now. Originally it was diagnosed as ITB syndrome by my primary care physician about 2 months ago. I've began stretching the **** out of my iliotibial band and basically have quit running. Still have the aching sensation behind/below the kneecap - feels kind of dull most of the time, but can become especially bothersome going down stairs and sitting for long periods of time. I went to an OS last week, they put me on strait-leg exercises for my quads. It's too soon for me to tell if it's helping.

The OS visit was disappointing. He kind of shrugged and said something to the effect that "this is one of those vague problem that comes and goes"..and the whole time I'm thinking "yeah, like when?..been dealing with it for about 4 months now". I just want to get back into training.

Hi - I have been dealing with knee pain too...your comment about feeling dull pain and weakness when walking down stairs really hit home for me...I have been having that feeling for 1 year. I have to say that you should keep on the doctors. Having pain even though it is dull that keeps you up at night is not good. I can only say this because I had that same pain and I have only begun to feel relief allowing me to finally sleep at night and also to walk dow the steps without thinking "there's something wrong with my knee". This has allowed me to do some running again too.

So keep going back to your doctor to get this worked out!!!! Also, ask for second opinions, it's your life, your sleep and your running...

If you still want to readon ,,, my problem was complex because I had a broken fibula (bone on side of knee) that I never got help for because I had the same symptoms of ITB (except the pain never went away when i stopped running). Finally, after the healingof the bone break and 3 series of 8 to 10 visits each to PT, the PT guy believes that I had a problem with my LCL (Lateral Collateral Ligament). THis is the ligament that attaches the fibula to the knee area on the outside of your knee and is often overlooked by physicans when diagnosing outside of the knee pain.!!!!!!

keep the faith and keep on the doctors :-)
