Long Runs and Muscle Aches

I just started to do a long run on Sundays (6.5 or 7.5 miles). My normal runs are from 3.5 (lots of hills) to 5 miles. So I am running about 23 miles a week. On my 2 off days I do yoga and crunches to stretch and strengthen my muscles. I have been running for a year.

My question centers around muscle aches that I experience in the evening after my long run. My calves and the area right above my knee ache. It keeps me awake at night. I usually end up taking a ibuprofen and rubbing sportscream on the area. The legs are fine the next day.

Is this common after a long run? Is there anything I can do to prevent it?

I'm the same way! Usually after I am sitting still for a while I'll be stiff as a board when I get up. I wish I had some suggestions for you, but I follow the same routine, I take an IB when I go to bed and wake up just fine.

You are not alone. After my first 10 miler last weekend I ached like I had the flu!
