still questioning diagnosis
OK, I will attempt to make this long story as short as possible. I had bilateral stress fractures in 2005 -3 weeks out from a marathon. Overtraining, low hormones, and pronation (that was just last month finally picked up on) were all causes. Now 2 years later I seem to have minor set backs every few months and I can't remember the last time I ran pain free.
Anyways, I was having horrible medial shin pain (just like with my stress fractures) that started in July. I had been off from running for about 9 months due to having a baby. I went to a sports doc who sent me to have ART due to scar tissue. The ART specialist said I have the worst calves/shin scar tissue he has ever felt. I took 4 weeks off of running and continued with my ART treatment 2 times a week. I then started back slowly but the pain was still there. I demanded a MRI to determine between bone or muscle due to my history. MRI came back completely normal- what the H#$%!
So here I am training for a Jan marathon with a strange pain that won't go away. It is medial shin pain that radiates up and down between my knee and ankle. It feels ok after a couple miles and feel fine after I get done. It is about 6 hours later that it bothers me. It doesn't hurt when I land on it- it hurts in the push off phase of walking or running- even getting up from a chair is tough. I started taking Celebrex and it has helped some. I heat before running because I run early morning and it is horribly tight in the morning. It feels like my muscles in my lower leg are all stuck together. I ice massage 2-3 times a day. I am in shoes for pronation and I am doing hip exercises per a therapist because she thinks that is why I pronate.
Has anybody had scar tissue from an old injury feel like this or do you think there is something more? It is driving me crazy because I feel so weak in the push off phase and it is definitely slowing me down.
