Neck strained during running?

Hey guys,

about 4 or 5 days ago i had a state knockout schools meet where i ran an 800m. About half an hour after the race i had a sudden onset of sharp pain in my neck which hurts with virtually all movement of my head/right arm. Is it possible i strained my neck or gained some sort of injury during the race? 5 days later, pain is still there...any thoughts/ideas?

cheers

Re: Neck strained during running?
possibly a "facet lock" - probably pretty high up in the C2/C3 area. See a good PT who does manual therapy and they can instruct you in some self mobilization techniques or exercises to help relieve the muscle spasming. Also - ice massage to the neck muscles will provide a little short term relief. If you have access to a good massage therapist - some gentle work on the muscles of your neck and upper back should help.
When you pinch the joint capsule of a facet joint in your spine, muscles often spasm as a "splinting mechanism" to protect the area -- which of course results in a lot of discomfort when you try to move. See a good PT who does manual therapy. You can check the NAIOMT web page for a listing of ones near you. http://www.naiomt.com[/URL" target="_blank">
