Knee or Hamstring pain???

I just finished my 3rd marathon of the year on 10/4 and both my knees hurt terribly afterward, the left more so.I had to use my hands to lift it up for stairs or to get out of a car. I took a week off and then resumed training for the Vegas marathon. My left knee will feel fine until about 6 miles into a run and then I will get a tight pulling feeling behind my knee (where the leg bends) from there the pain will move to the outside of my knee cap. It can get very painful causing me to stop running and limp home. However within a hour of stopping the knee feels better and there is no pain anywhere. I ran a very slow, easy half marathon this last weekend and when I started to feel the tightness I lubed the knee up with Tiger Balm and it seemed to help a bit. I really want to do the Vegas marathon but also don't want to risk a permanent or chronic condition. Any ideas as to what it may be and maybe how to help it get better? Shoes are the right fit and not over worn. I run on asphalt and trails. I have been running for a little
over 3 years now

How are you doing on Quad stretches? FWIW, a tight quad will pull the knee cap to the outside.

Maybe a few sets of squats to strengthen the inside as well as quad stretches.?

I do a light weight/core workout 3 times a week. My knees were fine until the Mount Rushmore Marathon. It was cold (37) and rainy. Our 26.2 miles were done on a old railroad trail/track. I know I pushed myself a bit to hard for the first 13 and really felt it in the last 13. Some think it may be ITBS others a tendinitis. Me.... I just want to figure out a way to help it get better and stay better. Not sure which stretches will be the best, etc.
Do you have any ideas of why it would get tight and slighly numb behind the knee cap before the pain starts?

"Do you have any ideas of why it would get tight and slighly numb behind the knee cap before the pain starts?"

Could be the beginning of Sciatica caused by a bulging disk in the lower back. Don't know of course and would encourage having it checked out. Disk bulges out, causing numbness and then as it further bulges out, the pain increases in both knee and back.

Could also be an overly tight/developed quad as an overly tight/developed quad will pull the knee cap to the outside with it's associated set of warning problems.

Are you doing hip stretches?

Lay on back, knees brought up.

Pull knee, with both hands, to chest, twice, (don't force as you're just stretching) first time to a count of twenty and the second time to a count of thirty. Both knees, alternating. You need a thirty count to get the tendons to get and hold the stretch message.

Hip stretch two:

Lay on back with knee pulled up, other leg laid out. Take opposite hand to outside of knee and pull the knee over to the side; l-knee to r and second time, r-knee to l. This will stretch the hip tendons.

Do this in an alternating pattern. Pull knee back. Pull second knee back, pull knee over, pull second knee over; 20 count. Do a second time for a thirty count.

Benefit will be noticed fairly quickly over an expected two week time.

FWIW, I suffer from a blown out L3/L4 and this set of stretches keeps me going (loosened up) and has helped many others I've shared it with.

In the simple, for the quad; lay on your tummy and pull your foot back and this will stretch the quad where it attaches just above the knee area. Do this twice, alternating between the l and the r for a twenty count and a thirty count before going out.

Hope this helps.

I will definately get to work on the specific stretches. I really appreciate the timely responses. You know us runners- never wanting to give up "running time". I'll let you know if this helps.
I'm also going to make sure to up my Vitamin C intake. That usually seems to help me also. How do you personally feel about Tiger Balm? I have a brother-in-law who swears by DMSO but I'm just not sure about that..... but if it works?????
