Microfracture and returning to running?

Hi
I had knee surgery on both knees back in early October. One knee was simple cleanup, the other ended up being a minor microfracture procedure. I have not yet asked my surgeon (recently) if I'll be able to return to running (he didn't really nay say it when I asked after the surgery....but everything I'm reading says NO)...has anyone here had the microfracture procdure and returned to running? I really, really hope so....this is sort of freaking me out a bit :-(

Thanks!

Lisa

Lisa,

Sorry to hear about this.

I have not had this type of surgery, but from what I've read from articles, you could be talking six months to one year if it "microfracture surgery". Then you throw another surgery in with it!

I don't follow the NBA - as in basketball, but one player, Greg Oden: Portland Trailblazers Microfracture Surgery & Recovery[/URL" target="_blank"> had this surgery a couple of weeks before the season started and he is out for the season. That is from this October to as late as June 2008.

You'll need to rehab as well. Has the doctor referred you to a Physical Therapist? You'll need one!

The best to you!

Hey Lisa,

You will come back from this. Work hard in rehab and you may come back sooner than you think.

I fractured my Sacrum in 2 spots at the end of 2005. Didn't get an MRI until 6-7 weeks later when I couldn't take the pain any longer while running. The doc told me 3 months no running. I crosstrained like crazy to stay in shape and went back to see the doc 6 weeks later. I felt great. He told me another 3-4 weeks. I took one more week and started running again. 4 weeks later I ran a 3:18 marathon and didn't look back.

By the way, I noticed the "Ultra" in your name. Is that your main course of activity up to this point?

Lisa,

I had ACL replacement on both knees and microfracture performed on my right knee (second operation on that knee). I just completed the Richmond Marathon Saturday at 18 mos. post op. (my recovery and others posted in this thread: www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum11/HTML/007270-10.shtml).[/URL" target="_blank">

I have no knee pain and am looking forward to many more years of running. I'm confident that if you take you're PT seriously, you will be, too.

We look forward to a race report from you in the coming months.

Again. Thank you, thank you, thank you for both of your posts on this. I feel MUCH better about the whole situation :-)

That's the spirit. A positive attitude is half the battle. You are on your way.

Boulder 100. I may consider that as well down the road. I'm looking at Kettle Moraine (KM100) in June for a little redemption and the possibility of going back to Leadville(LT100) in August. I have 2 strikes against me on that course over the last two years. I'm bound to get it.

Hardrock is my big goal though. Maybe now, with my new, repaired, happy and strong knees, I'll be able to handle those downhill stretches!!Lisa<HR>

Hardrock is my way out there goal as well. If (when) I make it through LT100 I will put my name in the hat for that one. The beauty of terrain alone is a reason to go. I just love the mountains.
