Could this be a form of sciatica?

I am also a new runner, with pains in my right leg between hip and knee, sometimes groin side, sometimes exterior. This doesn't feel like a strain, sprain, or tear. Mine, at any rate, feels more like the sciatica I have occasionally felt in my back - "phantom" pain that comes and goes and is difficult to pinpoint, occasionally a sharp ripple of pain even while standing still, occasionally a feeling more like having bumped my thigh into a big blunt object. leg weakness on the right side, pain that sometimes feels Better while running than not. I started training for the first time about ten weeks ago, never had a pain like this before. I'm running on a treadmill. Any clues?

go see an orthopedist. sounds like a disc problem. or you could take a couple weeks off (completely) , don't bend or twist your back, if you get better - bingo.

Karen - take a few days off to let things settle down, then resume with walking, perhaps some time in the pool. While you're off - pick up on some flexibility and strength exercises. Areas to work on flexibility include: calves, hamstrings, hip flexors, quads, gluteals. Also do some core and lower extremity strength exercises. Don't waste your time on the machines at the gym - you'll have better carryover of strength if you focus on more functional exercises. Areas that might be worth working on include your lower back, lateral hips, abs and glutes. Finally - take a look back at your training log and make sure that you didn't ramp things up too quickly, and check your shoes for wear/fatigue. Hope this helps. Janet
