Re: Wed Aug 29 Boomer Runs

Some nice work on the track this morning, like Mary and Cynthia.  I don't know the exact temperature & humidity when I headed out the door, I think it was in the low 70's and about 100% humidity.  I ran easy to the high school track, only to find out the marching band was using it.  So I jogged a little further down Main Street to the park.  Lucikly I had my Palm handy because I had to do some quick math on the calculator (the kids are math whizzes-I'm not bragging, it's true-DS tested out of 2 grades of algebra-they get it from their mom's side).

The track there is 328m, I found out. So I did my reps there, and I won't know if I was on pace until I figure it out later. It felt right and my HR was right. Then I did my intervals, which worked out nicely because I was going to do 1000m anyway so I did 3 laps. I did those in 5:19 (my usual time for 1000m), 5:30 and 5:33, with 2-min. recovery jogs. Max HR was 173. I jogged home, and by this time it was 79 degrees and 83% humidity. My legs were like rubber. If I had gotten up earlier, I could have done another set of reps and enjoyed the run more.

Keep it up, Mary. Nice midweek runs everyone! Ribs, hope the MRI finds your problem.

    Perch—Ouch! also

I have a simular story this morning. Out on my run and a puppy Pit Bull walking off leash comes running up toward me. Of course the owner says "He's friendly". I'm taking no chances. I stop, prepare to turn it's head into a football with my foot. Well the owner was right, friendly. But you never know.

Anyway the rest of my run...77° at 7am in SoCal. 107° later on. 3.8 miles at a nice cruising speed in just under 33 minutes. 8:40 pace.

Took my daughter to the chiropracter yesterday, her back has been killing her from volleyball. Thinking about my sore hip, I asked him to see if I was out of alignment. He checked me out and my left leg was a half inch longer than my right. So I made an appointment for Friday. Hopefully, this will help.

    Good day all, stay cool!

I loved to see BabyinAA picture in yesterday’s post. Thanks daddyinAA for posting them.

Hey Karl, you should just have ran your workout at the first track regardless who is there. The same thing happened to me yesterday... and this is what I wrote in my journal...I just came back from my one mile barefoot run. I was a sight... imagine... black mini skirt (which helped me keep my steps short a-la-chi-running), red silk blouse (I had a business meeting this morning) and running in the track barefoot, slowly as not to sweat too much while the high school football team was also practicing. Many of the kids, including the coach knows me... they all said hi Mrs. Nash, or WTG Mrs. Nash, probably all of them wondering about my sanity. I just smiled and said to them... isn’t life grand... isn’t freedom grand...Half and hour later I came back to the office, put some bronze lip sticks on and off I went to another meeting.

Rest those legs Holly; we do not want any bad surprises before your marathon.

6 miles this morning which include 6x100 hill repeats. These hill repeats are getting easier now.

Hang in there SR, I sure hope you get your answers soon.

Re: Wed Aug 29 Boomer Runs

Mariposai, I would've loved to have seen that. I wonder if the kids are talkin'....

Holly, take it easy grrl! Tired legs are understandable after your last long run, but that was a few days ago, right? Hope all is ok, time to taper now!

Perch... ditto. I worry about dogs around here... many are loose despite leash laws.

Hey, when you guys do intervals (Lou, Mary... others...) do you do them on a track? How do you know the distance? I do intervals on the treadmill usually if only cuz it's easy to track the distance/speed and total distance. Otherwise, I lose count. Also, how do you track your total distance if you're doing a bunch of sprints on a track with recoveries? Obviously, I don't do intervals much...

Another gorgeous day here. Hope this weather holds for a few more weeks. Sure don't wanna do Equinox in mud... or snow... Will try to get out for about 6-7 of hills tonight. Surprising how good these hill workouts are feeling...

Hi Boomers!  Perch hope the dog bite doesn't get infected, I think the tetnus shot is a good idea.

A little smokey, but a nice cool sunny morning on the Bitterroot. I am so glad that I am retired and don't have to get up during the dark early hours for a run. Did 6.2 miles at an easy pace.

    Good Runs all, Larry

I use both a track and trail, depending on the occasion and my mood. I am liberated from the track (when I want to be) by my Garmin 305. You can set up the little jobbie to do intervals based on time and/or distance for you, and it will dutifully record them for you, counting merrily along the way. On the track, I use it as an expensive stopwatch/lap counter.

If I have the Garmin, I just press start at the beginning and stop at the end, and it reports the whole shebang, work, recovery, cooldown... the lot. If I don't (and now, I'd better be on the track), I do the math in my head and fingers ("Hmmm. 2.2k warmup plus 8x400 on plus 8x200 off plus 1600 cooldown equals.... equals.... D@mn. Gimme some coffee.")

Off to the pool soon for an early lunch workout.

Ran 3.5 miles with overcast 70+ degree weather. Had planned to do more since I didn't do it yesterday and the sun was not shining but the humidity sucked all my energy out.

    here will be another day.

    try this again...

Erika, I usually do longer intervals, like mile or two mile repeats, half mile recoveries, and have two great spots, both on straight shot bike paths. If I do those, I use my Garmin. If I do shorter intervals, like 800 or 1200 repeats (90 sec. rests I believe; it's been awhile), I do them on the track and just use my Timex. I'm such a poor techno geek I just reset after every repeat and recovery.

I don't do sprint intervals anymore. Just longer repeats and hills. Lotsa hills.

If you get the intervals in at the proper pace (muy importante) at the track, don't worry about the total distance for the books (drives me a bit crazy that people do so). It's GOOD. !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|border=0!

10 M @ 8:45 m/M with a nice (high 60's F) north wind under an overcast sky.  RH was about 90%, so I soaked two shirts and two headbands.

Nice running, Boomers. CHoovie, send those temps my way.

BTW better put my shoe report in here.
Shoe report: I think I like my New Balance 1023's better than the Adidas supernova's. Less cushioning in the heel and more in the forefoot for the NB's. I wasn't crazy about the soft heels in the adidas. The NB's heel cup is tight on my heel like the adidas. I don't care for shoes with any wobble or slippage in the heel. Maybe I should buy several pairs before they change thier design like adidas did. The adidas change was very minor where the top of the shoe came in contact with my ankle. Probably wouldn't have been a problem, but although I have strong ankles, for some reason I don't like anything touching my ankles while running. Perhaps some illogical thought process. Probably could spend thousands of dollars on a sports pcychologist to help work through that, but buying a different brand of shoes is probably a bit more economically sound.

    Good Runs All, Larry

Must have been a positive carry-over from yesterday's speedy work, but today's lunch run of 5 miles was downright sproinky in 39:43, and it wasn't a labored, ohmygosh, but felt comfortable.  Chalking it up to a good day and sticking to it!

Re: Wed Aug 29 Boomer Runs

2000 yards in the Pool of Bliss, with 5x(100 hard Re: Wed Aug 29 Boomer Runs + 50 easy), followed by 5x50 hard with 10s rests.

Then core exercises involving a Bosu ball 'n stuff.

Evanflein. I do interval workouts on the track only; the Garmin isn't accurate enough for this stuff. Improvement from week to week comes a few seconds at a time, which is in the noise for a Garmin. I usually do 200m or 400m recovery intervals, so I just add those to the length of the repeats to get the total distance.

The weather is very nice today Mid country Lunch run and it was only 75 and cloudy it felt absolutely great. I went out for 4 but did 5 instead. time 49:55 pace 9:59.

First time the pace is below ten in this reincarnation. I am very happy about that.

Perch being a rural running I understand the dog thing. I have a couple of pairs that do that thing. Fortunately being familiar with the area I know where they are and what they respond too.

I agree with the medical care but I don't think you will really know if you are in the clear until the next full moon. Give your wife the silver bullet, she'll know what to do.

    Excellent intervals and run folks.

    Peace
