Anybody else want some cheese to go with the whine???

Yesterday like a lot of folks I was pretty upset about the changes to
coolrunning.com. Today after giving it some thought I feel perhaps we are all
jumping to conclusions before active.com is done converting us off of
coolrunning.com.

Coolrunning needed to change. The servers were overloaded and they even
removed search capabilities due to load on the servers. Sure you could search
using google but that was a pain. The coolrunning infrastructure needed a
complete update and this was something the original owners of coolrunning were
probably not interested in doing. I am sure the original owners never realized
how big this site would become.

Problems with the forums that people are having I feel they will address in
time. If they find a requirement that people really want they will try to
develop it if there is a need. Software development takes time and I am sure
they are already addressing our concerns.

The training log. This is a sour note on a lot of people's plate, I am one
of them. I am sure in time they will recover lost data and will try to
implement some items we just need. Again this tales time to develop. I remember
before the transition even started tracking shoe usage was part of the premium
package but because so many coolrunning users told them this was a big issue
they included it with the free log now.

I am not trying to say active is better or worse, it is just different
and they are experiencing some serious growing pains by absorbing coolrunning.
I am not sure if they have ever done anything like this before. Let’s give them
a chance to tweak the system to fit our needs and not just complain and run
away to a different site, that is not what ot means to be a runner.

For what it is worth I am not a Active employee or have any business
associations with them. I am just a humble coolrunning user like everyone else
who has to deal with this like everyone else.

Let's not be to hasty,

Mike

Re: Anybody else want some cheese to go with the whine???

I understand that the magnitude of their screwup may inpire pity for Active, but calling us whiners is over the top and betrays a sadly disproportionate affection for a rather bungling corporate entity over your fellow citizens.

To wit:

1) In an internet economy, page views are dollars. Page users drive revenues, not subscriptions. Just ask Google. Just because the coolrunning log was a free service doesn't mean its users didn't create any value. As such, the users themselves are valuable. Screwing over your valued customers is dumb business.

2) "not better or worse, just different" - A patently false statement. 99.9% of users here disagree. A running log where you don't readily see your total mileage? Basic functions forgotten=bad design. "Hey here's a car upgrade! The ignition switch is in the trunk and the
gas pedal is in the glove box, but hey, all change is hard! You'll get
used to it!"

3) we didn't even want anything special - we just wanted the dang thing left alone. First rule of business changes, as in medicine, first "do no harm." They did much harm.

4) finally, these so-called "whiners" are doing Active a big favor, they are giving their time and effort to let them know how to right a substantial wrong, and fast. Users are bleeding away with rapid speed, and Active is now aware of that fact and why.

Of course... perhaps, for some bizarre reason, the bleeding away of users was part of the plan. That is the only thing that would make sense of the shifting of people over to a new product like the Active running log, the poor quality of which is evident within 1 second of usage. Active retains the coolrunning log or loses the vast majority of those users forever. Case closed.
