Chicago - How about the winning finishes!!

First, the men's. Amazing, it was like a track event with pushing and elbowing.

The women's finish was unreal. Kind of sad, I thought, the rookie upended by foolish inexperience.

arrrgh. You have to click ahead and look for the "surprise finish" clip to see the women's finish.

Unfortunately I stopped watching the women's race after the commentator's said Pirtrea was a certain winner and missed all the fun.

Bit sneaky of Adere to hide behind those men.

Thanks for the links Crigar. I've been completely out of touch with the news the last few days.

WOW. Amazing.

Oh no... Pirtea never looks back, she high-fives the spectators, waves,... you can't tell me she didn't have something left. Adere was far back but dropped the hammer and never gave up. Great overhead shot of her flying by at the end.

Some major racing lessons to be learned there from both runners.

Honestly, I don't understand Pirtea's behavior. Was she naive, thinking she'd left the competition in the dust? Inexperienced? Just too cocky? Caught up in the moment? Obviously this was an amazing performance regardless (especially for her first) but with a little more focus it could have been a victory, too.

Tramps,

In the Army, we always emphasize "situational awareness." Pirtea didn't have it. It cost her big-time.

Funny, I was watching a football game yesterday and the comentator said something like "if he has to look back you know he's not that fast"
Sorry, I can't remember who said it or even who he was talking about.( I was kinda in and out after my long run.) But, a very true statement just the same

Wow! Amazing the kind of speed Adere had left in her at the end of a marathon. She was flying!

Re: Chicago - How about the winning finishes!!
I got to agree: Adere was flying down the stretch. Felt like I was watching the stretch drive of the Kentucky Derby with her swinging wide to gain the edge--great strategy. Clearly Pirtea lost her focus at the end. Be interested to know what her final 400-800--1 k was compared to Adere.

Two great finishes on what was otherwise a really ugly day in Chicago for the marathon.
