Finished 1st marathon at 43!

I did it!

If you recall my previous thread (sore/ tight muscles - can't complete training,) I was in bad shape 1 month ago & I never completed my training. Nor did I ever run more than 29 miles in a week. Yet I was able to accomplish 2 of my 3 goals. 1st, was to complete the 26.2. 2nd, was to do it under 4 hrs (my time: 3:58.) 3rd goal was to get under 3:45, but I really didn't count on that one because of the major setbacks during training. I was so over come with joy crossing the finish line I was literally at the verge of tears. Today, being the day after, I'm walking awkward, but the soreness has already started to decrease from yesterday. It's a dull soreness & tightness involving all muscles on both legs - nothing like the sharp pain in my left quads that I had a month ago.

Now I'm really excited & encouraged for next year. I'm planning on entering the Marine marathon in Wash DC, so I have just over 1 year to prepare. I calculate (from lots of data collected over the Internet & my good 8 to 8.5 pace for 2/3 of this race) that I can knock off 20 min. by being better trained, and another 10 min. by loosing another 10 lbs. This will get me over the finish line under 3:30, which will qualify me for Boston in 2010 at age 45. I'm convinced that if I do everything perfect (as humanly possible) over the next year, this goal is possible. What do you all think?

I think that what you set out in your heart to do, will be accomplished just as long as you plan it out and stick to the plan.

Post often, ask questions, and let this group help you along the way.

Thanks for posting and congratulations.

Congratulations! That is a HUGE feat! Well done!

There are a lot of veteran marathoners here, lots of wisdom if you have questions. Good luck next year.

Like Econo says, take it easy for a little while. And congratulations on your accomplishment -- you will never forget most of the details of your first marathon. And by the way, your time is amazing considering your story about your training difficulties. I can definitely see a BQ in your future.

For what it's worth, you were a lot better trained that I was for my first one. I foolishly attempted a marathon when my previous lifetime long run was only 12 miles. I finished in 5:15 (at age 52), but paid for it big-time during and long after the event. I hope your lasting memories are better than mine!

Congrats of completing your first in such a speedy time. Well done. I too completed my first marathon this weekend and what a great time I had. I'm not experienced enough to advise you on your future goal but there are many on here who are. I will say this, whatever you do, enjoy!

You ran a great marathon, dpoppel, especially so since it was your first. It appears that you've got a good plan to get that BQ. Congratulations.

Re: Finished 1st marathon at 43!
Congratulations on a great job dpoppel, especially on your limited training!

Don't underestimate how important the proper training and base really is. You'll probably surprise yourself with just exactly what you might be capable of if you train properly.

Your goals seem well within reach...IF you make the committment to train properly.

Best of luck in your next attempt when ever and where ever it might be, and maybe just maybe I'll see you in Boston in 2010!

Re: Finished 1st marathon at 43!
Recover, then folow a reasonable training plan and stay healthy, and I think you'll get there. One word of encouragement: if you train well, the next one will be easier, even though you'll run it faster. Good luck.
