Re: Here or KR?

I too was surprised at Labduck's post as well as the one that followed later by runningbehind. Here is my recollection of the precedent to all this. Sometime around August we learned about the Active takeover of CR and a whole slew of people left CR and began posting on Kick. At the time, we learned that Rich had generously created a Masters forum to accommodate the B&B'ers from CR. There were a number of very hospitable changes that Kick made to the migrating group. I too signed up in August, but did not post there.

So there was this big group of former CR B&B'ers who went over to Kick and began posting there. Some continued to dual-post, both here and there, and some left completely. I commented on this recently here, and those I named came over to deny that they have left, but of course they did.

So if you go look at the daily on Kick, you will find two groups of people. A very small group of original (that is to say, Kickrunners who had been there for ages and not from CR) members, and a very large group of former CR B&B'ers. Next time Kick gets back up, go count them for yourself. They are predominantly former CR B&B'ers posting on the site that Kick was kind enough to provide for the CR migraters, and that is what surprised me about Lab's post. Someone started the daily yesterday on Kick with a comment in the title line about "snow" and that apparently set him off about the east coast influence, implying that the PNW influence has somehow been disturbed. I believe he simply meant that the Masters daily had been small and intimate, and now there was such an influx of new people, he was uncomfortable. He is entitled to that opinion, but as Sierra points out, and as we all know, Kick is not set up to discriminate for or against groups of people. To succeed and be fair it has to welcome all.

I didn't concern myself with Lab's post, although I was surprised by it, because I know he is on the DL right now. He is a strong athlete and this is a tough time for him. I too get grouchy when injured, as I am now.

But I wish that runningbehind would have been specific about what the problem was. The complaints seemed vague to me. I perceive no difference in the tone or content of the daily in CR vs. the daily over in Kick. I wish one of them would just say what the problem is. As to private jokes, comments about fines, etc., all of those things exist in any community forum. They are not intended to harm anyone, and since the majority of the population in that daily comes from here, I don't see how such remarks would confuse anyone. Re: Here or KR?

Holly, I have no idea what was said previously, but as the site admin at Kickrunners, let me assure you that EVERYONE is welcome there!

The site is currently down as we move it to a dedicated server so that we can offer everyone, current members and newcomers alike, a faster and more secure site!

Again, if you or anyone has any questions about anything related to Kickrunners.com, please email me at sierra@kickrunners.com or post here... and I will reply as quickly as I can.

Holly, *do not do that*! Maybe you were kidding, but in case you weren't, I would recommend some running forum, any running forum. I know you think your incredible improvements over the past year were all due to your Garmin, but I have to think Boomers and Beyond played some small part. There must have been a few occasions when you drug yourself out of bed when you would have otherwise slept in!

Re: Here or KR?

Hi Vkay and all. I to was turned off by what a few said in KR but decided to disregard it because KR announced going to a dedicated server to accomodate more people. I really have to go by what sierra say's and what they are doing. Having a slow connection speed, performance of a site is significant. CR is slower now than before the improvement. There were many post that I would have liked to have replied to but settled for whatever was on top because it took too long to go from one post to the other. KR is fast in that regard. Instead of minutes of waiting KR is seconds. If enough CR's stay there, I am inclined to stay with KR. When I saw the message about the site being shut down, this time i just assumed they were doing the xfer as they said and Siera confirms this. As far as a running log goes, I only briefly used the one on CR but it proved to be too slow and inconvienient. A spreadsheet or a spiral bound logbook works just fine and since most of my runs are with my FR, the software that came with the FR is great in that it stores detailed information and will allow me to make note of other things for each run.

There is another thought too, the active.com takeover is so much like when Gart Sport Took over most of our sports stores, reducing them to trying to please everyone and selling shoddy merchandise forcing me to drive further to find the same service I was accustomed too. So when does Active.com by out KR?

Good Runs All, Larry

Re: Here or KR?
I agree with Larry. The KR format is much faster and a delight to use. I too felt the smaller group feeling which was kind of nice. But within CR I see "small groups" too. We don't reply to everyone's post. Some runners are replying to specific other runners more that others. It's like any BB there are multiple "conversations" going on at the same time. All this is good stuff. We all learn and grow closer and friendships are born. There is no pressure to read and comment on all the posts. That would be silly. Either location would work for us just as long as we keep the group together and add newcomers. So that brings it down to functionality. Which is easier to use. Right now (jury is still out) if the dedicated KR server prevents downtime then KR has a HUGE advantage.

Note to self: gotta remeber to turn e-mail notifcation off after posting..

Re: Here or KR?
I'll throw in my two cents because what I read yesterday has been bugging me.

I was hurt by Labduck's and runinbehind's comments. There was at least one more comment, too. I really don't care who's on the DL list. We are all on the DL list at one time or another. Get over yourself.

I migrated over to CR after RW online changed a bit over a year ago (I had been posting on RW for 5 years). Most of the regular masters from RW went to runango.com, which was set up by two guys on the RW marathon forum. They've done a really good job of creating a whole new running website. I still go over and lurk because I do still think of many masters and I had met several. Even though I liked the people at runango who migrated over, some very much, it was a very small group of people. And because it's not easy to find on the internet, it has stayed small. Small is nice if you want to talk to the same people, but I personally like "meeting" new people. I have met (in person and virtually) some wonderful people on CR the past two years, some of whom are newer to CR than me.

So, I hope CR improves. I don't really care for the format, either. I do miss many people, but they know who they are and I'll just have to bug them by e-mail.

Re: Here or KR?

First of all, vkay....WELCOME. As has been said, you feel free to post, read and learn. We have runners of all abilities and disabilities. It is what makes a forum like this so neat.....we ALL need each other. Some people are strong in the area of running, some are strong in determination, others excel is motivation, but WE ALL GAIN.

Change is a funny thing. Everyone likes the results that change eventually brings, but no one likes the process of change. With even the BEST of changes, there is always a sacrifice that is realized. Most of us like the CR forum of Boomers. Quite honestly, the support I received from everyone and the accountability has brought me from someone who ran 58 miles during the year of 2003 to now staring at 1,000 miles for 2007. (I am now at 961 for those who have been following my chase for 1,000). While I will never win any races for speed, I am having a FANTASTIC time learning and maintaining the best overall shape that I have EVER been in and that includes the days when I was playing serious basketball. So to lose the influence of ANYONE ....hurts me.

Granted, the forum sometimes takes a funny or strange twist during some days. With so many posting, there are a lot of private little jokes and conversations that go on. While it has nothing to do with me, I enjoy it and am amused by it. Sometimes a bit of nonsense is good for us to watch.

Some of you will remember my attempt at trying to focus on certain races for Boomer meetings to occur. While some people thought it was a GREAT idea and encouraged me to do that, I was more or less told by others to mind my own business and that Boomer meetings could happen without my interference. Well, unfortunately my good intentions was misconstrued as me trying to interfere with the excellent work of people I had wanted to help. All of that being said only points out that on line communities can sometimes get confusing as people don't always see eye to eye with each other. The irony in this situation was that my goal was accomplished for what I was trying to do, and I didn't end up needing to do anything.

Anyway, let's all try to be patient. I don't believe anyone is out there intending to cause us grief. They have told us that they are working hard to get things going smoother and improved. I would just hate to lose the influence and help of ANY of you from CR Boomers who have helped me with my running. I am sure many of you have NO idea of the impact and influence you wield through your daily postings, race reports, and sharing of your experiences. I am hoping this will continue in the days, months and yes, even years ahead. We will figure out the best route. I am already excited at how we are talking through this.

YOU ARE APPRECIATED and I personally THANK YOU !!!!!

Joey

Re: Here or KR?

We were all with CR at one point in time.......my hope was that most everyone would find a common place to hang out.....only time will tell...

I try to ignore "negative" postings and find it easier to just not respond.

Holly...the vast majority of Boomers are a very welcoming group...which is what has made it all so special....as I know you are quite aware...and I would agree..if I didn't feel welcome I would leave...

But the majority of us all agree that we are all welcome....in either location and even both if you so desire....

Re: Here or KR?

As mod in both places and an active member of both I posted to that thread yesterday that Sierra and Rich opened KR up to anyone who agreed to abide by the terms of the site.

I would like to apologize to anyone who was made to feel unwelcome for those that did not see it yesterday. And thanks to Sierra for stepping in here and verifying the welcome. I am busy covering for all the folks who take their vacation time now at work and haven't been able to keep up during the day.

We are all adults here and this ain't the CH. You are all entitled to your opinion but let's treat each other like we'd like to be treated.

Alright ! I admit it. I'm the nasty that started the thread with the dreaded word snow in it. I'm sorry. What's the fine ribs?

I was also rather surprised by a few of the comments. I signed up with KR in August, but didn't post there too often. I was waiting to see what would happen with CR.

I do prefer the interface at KR and until, what was it yesterday?, felt welcome. Then came the punch. Hmmm. Hopefully it was only a bad day or mood. The funny thing about one of the comments made re: cliques, was that is exactly what they also are doing. I believe it's natural to be attracted to the familiar - not necessarily cliqueish (is that a word?).

I had to post something somewhere. I'm going through withdrawals. It's either this or drinking. Hey, maybe both. Yah.... that's the ticket.

Re: Here or KR?

Like most folks I was bothered by the posts at KR and have spent quite a bit of time, too much probably, trying to make sense out of them. I think it comes down to folks routines have been disrupted and that makes them touchy and sensitive. Folks who went to KR had settled in there. Folks who came from CR when it went down were upset and came over chattering about CR and whether they were visiting or staying. No matter how you slice it things were different for everyone and no one was completely comfortable. Anyway, all that psychobabble aside Hally has, as usual, put it very well. Folks ought to do what they want. Lab Duck and Run'nbehind posted on behalf of no one but themselves. By going after a dedicated server KR has shown they are trying to be accomodating and I believe that folks will ultimatley be as welcome as they make themself there. CR is easier for me to use today then it was three days ago ( learning curves are mighty things) and I believe that many will decide to keep this their home eventually.

That's my .5 penny which in this economy is worth nothing at all,
