Re: Tips for cold weather running
I live in a fairly extreme location for cold weather running. This links to a blog piece I did a couple of years ago, describing how to dress for cold (say 0s to 20s) to very cold (sub zero) weather.

Best advice I've received about inclement-weather running:

"Just don't look at it through the window too long."

Oh, my. That rings truer than almost any advice I've ever received on these boards!

Re: Tips for cold weather running
When the weather here turns brisk and cold, I always add a longer sleeved shirt and then pull the sleeve ends over my hands.
Its time also to get out the knee length tights, and a hat instead of a visor, especially if it dips below 55 degrees....brrrrrrrrrr!

....also, after the first re-freeze,
try to run in the ''snow'' part of the road rather than the ''tire-slicked-ice'' part......

Oh, I forgot, earwarmers are a good thing to add too.

Re: Tips for cold weather running
Dips below 55? LOL! For some reason I have always been reluctant to wear yak tracks or anything that would add traction to my shoes for fear that they won't slip and tear a muscle. BTY last year I tried barefoot running in the snow at 9 degrees last year, my feet didn't get cold and I don't know what to think about that.

I found some great stretch pants, not exactly tight for the sake of modesty, made by hind, they are the best running pants I have tried so far. Usually wear a wicking shirt next to the skin, then layers and a light wind jacket, sock hat and light gloves. Vasoline on exposed skin in temps below 10 degrees. Thin socks are fine as my feet don't get cold. Clear sunglass lenses are good to at night, keeps me from getting a headache. Underware or shorts underneath is a good idea to prevent frostbites to certain parts of the body. If everything is snow covered and the sun is shinning bright, the white sun protector stuff is good for the nose.

Good Running all, Larry

Yes, that is funny...as 55 happens to be my cut-off point between wearing shorts or pants!

I agree about the earwarmers, especially when it is windy.

Re: Tips for cold weather running
Mustang Sally with you all the way. Don't think just go out there and run. The worse the weather the worse you feel about starting but the better you feel after you have finished.

I only took up running because I didn't like cycling at night in the Winter and some of my best runs have been at night in the rain. I run more in the Winter than anyother time.

People say to me isn't it horrible to run in the Winter but I say its better than Summer because I'm not hot and sweaty and I don't get flies in my eyes and mouth.

I prefer to wear a windproof "shell" which I can always take off and stuff in the back of my tights rather than fleeces, thin gloves ditto and if it get really cold a woolly hat.

Only problem is that with my windproof in the back of my tights I look like I've got terminal cellulite.

One downside of global warming has been missing the look of horror on pedestrians faces when you run by with iceicles hanging off your beard. A pleasure I assume Mustang you will never experience.

Socks make cheap gloves and enable the fingers to be together to keep them nice and toastie!

Re: Tips for cold weather running
Thanks for all these hints for this newbie.

Someplace I read . . . correct me if I'm wrong . . . to add 20 degrees to the outside temp as that's what it will feel like when I'm done and to dress for that temp. Comments?
