Beginner Runner

Need recommendations with running shoes - light weight, overpronation, size 12 women's. Am I better off with men's shoes?

Re: Beginner Runner
It's hard to offer meaningful shoe recommendations - we are all pretty unique in our shoe needs and preferences. I would suggest going to a dedicated running store where someone can fit your particular needs. That said, I also wear women's size 12 running shoes, and I have a difficult time finding suitable women's running shoes. I only wear a regular women's size 10 shoe, so if your regular shoe size is 12, you will definitely have a problem finding women's running shoes which tend to run a bit small. You want to have some clearance between your toes and the front of the shoe, so it's best to size up a little. I typically wear a size 10 men's running shoe. Good luck with the shoe hunt!

Re: Beginner Runner
Welcome, ipparalegal. I agree with Sue and Tom that a running store is the place to go for analysis, advice, and different shoes to try. A little research ahead of time like Tom suggested can't hurt as it gives you a starting place when you get to the running store.

Good luck

Re: Beginner Runner
Hey, ipparalegal, I'm a paralegal, too. I've wondered if there is any real difference between Men's and Women's shoes. I wear a small size, but have been known to buy Boy's or Youth shoes in the past, since I have wide feet and Women's shoes are sometimes too narrow. If you go to a running store and don't get the answers you want, don't be afraid to try another store. All running stores are not created equal.

Re: Beginner Runner
Bsides the difference in width of men and womens shoes, there apparently is a difference in the length of the toe box. At least that is what my DD was told.

She has difficulty with shoes as her feet are wide. She was trying men's shoes and the running shoe store guys told her it wouldn't slove her problems.

Re: Beginner Runner
I checked out Runners' World and think I might try on (at the running store) Saucony GRID Stabil 6 or NB 817. They are both for overpronation (especially the Saucony brand).

Re: Beginner Runner
ipparalegal, welcome!

I think you should find a store within reasonable driving distance that specializes in running. NOT a national chain in the mall. Ask them if you can bring them back if they hurt. A good store will let you run outside in them for a few blocks and also let you return them if they are not worn much, ie on the treadmill or where I live on the boardwalk.

Let us know how you are doing.

Just another heads up. If you are lightweight you may not want a real motion control shoe. The most severe are straight lasted boxes for heavy runners. A lightweight person would be looking for a mild to moderate shoe that is not too stiff. I pronate some and wear Brooks Adrenaline daily and Brooks Axiom to race.

No real endorsement, there are lots out there, but these are a medium version of motion control.

Re: Beginner Runner
Thanks for the pointer on the difference it makes whether one is a heavy, medium or light built runner! I will definitely keep that in mind as I search for the running shoes!
