The transition from CR's viewpoint

Hi folks,

My name is Dave Camire and I am one of the co-founders of Cool Running. Kevin Molloy and I started this business almost thirteen years ago and our mission has been to supply the best information and tools available and offer a friendly environment to our users.

For those of you who have been with us from the beginning, you have witnessed the enormous changes and growth in our site. I fondly remember our first month of operation we received 200 hits and we were thrilled. During our busiest month this year we received over 89 million hits and the site welcomed over 2.3 million visitors. Now that's growth!

However with growth comes challenges and one of ours was supporting an infrastructure that would keep pace with the enormous amount of users we were servicing. Kevin performed miracles by keeping the CR server operational despite the increased load; however band aids will only carry you so far.

By the end of 2006 we were frequently being forced to reboot our system. This often took place in the early morning hours so hopefully it was not obvious when our site was down. Our running logs as designed were also unable to handle the load. We also knew the existing software would not handle many of the features users were requesting on a regular basis.

So with our server maxed, our software prehistoric and our registration system broken we knew it would be impossible to continue the status quo. So with the help of the Active engineering team we embarked on an ambitious project to fix it. BTW both Kevin and I are still heavily involved with Cool Running. I serve as the senior editor of the site and Kevin is a frequent technical consultant. I feel strongly that we (Cool Running and Active) have not abandoned our original mission.

This brings us to today. Our goal was to establish the most stable, feature rich, robust community and tools for our community. Overall the transition went well, but we all fully recognize that there are serious issues that need to be addressed. We are listening to all the feedback and working hard to respond with solutions.

I would like to ask that you just give us a chance. Rest assured there are many folks at CR and Active that worked nights and weekends to manage the transition and are now redoubling efforts to get folks to a good place. I sincerely hope that you will stick with us and show your continued support as we work through this transition.

Thanks for listening,

Dave Camire

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Hi Dave:

1. Alright I understand the need for change but why did they have to change the log when the old format was easy to use and the new one is unncescessarily complicated. It's not like anyone asked me if I wanted to log everything twice. It's not like anyone said, "As a user of this system what changes would you want?".

2. I already gave you a chance. I waited around with no running log. I logged back on the 17th expecting things to have someone actually explain how to make things work. when the chatterbots gave me cut and paste answers, "We at active tried hard..." etc., I at least tried to ask questions. My data has been lost and messed up and I keep getting the same lame excuses.

3. Do you even realize that I have other alternatives? I have already stored my data on a spreadsheet, what I could save anyway. If necessary I could put it in a notebook. I used Coolrunning because it was convenient, but if you are not going to give me a log that is easy to use then heck with it I'll go somewhere else.

I'm sorry it has come to this, but whose fault is that,

Jonathan

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Hi Dave,

IT person here and a veteran of many system upgrades and go-lives. It's looking better and better everytime I log in. Running log is quirky, but those should be easy fixes for the database team as they see what is needed in terms of reporting and tracking. I'll keep hanging around and looking forward to seeing some of the bugs getting fixed.

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint
O.k. 2 things I would recommed changing on the new site. #1 is the running log. If you could have a feature that would show total miles for the year like the old log it would be appreciated. Also I know some people liked having the shoe log on the same page as the running etc... just to many pages to go to etc... #2, When posting people like to see all the posts on the page. They want to be able to respond to people and see what they wrote as they post. Look into these as the old site was able to provide this. Thanks for posting here and giving us and update. What most people want is the old site with the same features, but with more power as to support the amount of traffic you receive.

I guess i'm willing to try to hang in here too....finally figured out how to find my old logs, but the missing weather, shoe and mileage totals by week and month are missed....hope they find their way back, echoing what Fuller said....please get us an automatic log in feature back on here as well when possible....thanks

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Dave, thanks for posting your reasons for initiating the transition to the Active network. As a one-time employee of a small company that got purchased by a Fortune 100 company I certainly understand the complications involved with transition and growth.

Having said that, I think the reason for so much frustration right now is the lack of input that Cool Running users had in the change. Before, we had something that was very familiar to us all and which worked marvelously. Where it was a bit underpowered, we "got used to it" and all developed our own individual work-arounds. When news of impending transition came along, we were all told things would be much better but given very little specifics. Moreover as far as I know no one ever asked CR users what they would like to see in an "improved" system. What features were needed now that it didn't have? What features needed to stay just the way they were with no changes? Given how much the CR community seems to care about this network, I think many users would have had much valuable insight about the road ahead...if only someone had just asked them.

So that's my major criticism. Take it for what it is worth.

As for what to do now, I think it's obvious. Listen HARD to what CR users are saying now. The fact that so many are still here, even though they are very upset, means they still care. Thus you have an opportunity to turn this around. But don't delay; if you take too long, we will all eventually point and click our way to other places.

As for suggestions, one big thing I see right off the bat is the login process. Now, when I log in to Active, I am directed to the "MyActive" page. From there I have to navigate my way to the Cool Running forums, and the only easy way to even get there is to use the links in the "CR announcement" (which I assume won't be there forever) posted on the Running forums page. Why instead can't users create favorites of forums which in turn would show up on the MyActive page?

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Dave,

Great job with the transition. I know it has to be tough. We all know you and your team will work through all the bugs and get this forum and running logs as close to as possible to what we the "user" would like.

I echo a lot of the setiments that everyone else has already posted. I would love to be able to view everyone's posts when replying. When doing dialogs with the entire group it is tough to remember who said what when there is 10 - 20 posts already. ;)

Anyhow, keep up the great work with the transition.

David

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Exactly!!! I was quite happy with CR. I didn't see any need for 'updates and improvemnets'.

What I want---

  • see all posts when I am replying. In the old CR, in RRR we commented on everyone's workout/non-workout. When there are 10-20 posts, I can't remember who's doing what.

  • not have to log in every time. I come here several times a day. I don't want to log in every time.

  • NO MORE EMAILS!!! I don't need emails telling me that people are posting. Hubby was NOT impressed to go into email and see 200 emails from Active.

In the end, I'm going where ever everyone else goes. Here or Kick. These are my friends who in the past year and a half have seen me through the highs and lows. I don't wanna loose 'em!

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Mom, As far as the email go. Go to "My Active" and change your setting to not recieve email notification when on any discussion the you either start or reply on. I know what you mean you don't want all those emails. B-)

David--I have. Every time I've logged in I have. The emails kept coming! Blocking sender worked like a charm!

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Actually, go to the CR forums listing and check the left side of the page. There should be a button there that says "stop email notification." Click that and the emails should go away.

After you click that "stop" button, it changes to say "receive email notifications." Obviously you don't click that unless you want the flood of emails to resume.

Once nice thing I have noticed is that you can make the R&RR forum into an RSS feed and bookmark it to go straight to it from your browser's toolbar or bookmarks list. I set up that way a little while ago. Just go to R&RR and then click the little orange icon next to the URL (Macs have a blue "RSS" instead of the orange icon).

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint
I bookmarked the CR forums. When I arrive I click "login to participate", which now keeps me on the CR side of Active. I submitted a bunch of comments elsewhere including the lack of a "remember me" login function.

In general, I don't have a big problem with the new site and I appreciate the effort that the goes into these transitions but I echo Hawk's comments on user input. However; I didn't use the CR log before so am not in the position of having to find a new home for my training logs.

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Thank you CMJ Hawe for your thoughts. They help ease some pain...

As a former CR fan, it is so depressing to wait for all the improvements to be made. Surely viewing and using CR, the My Active people could see their site was just not ready to make the changeover.

In another six months, they may have improved My Active to the CR standard ready to complete the change. CR looked so very simple - that's why it was so good, while being highly effective in meeting our every need. My Active is just not a patch on CR in an endless list of ways. Dave and his mate did well!

The question is what do I do about it? I am still adding very limited information to my log - just enough to be a record. None of my high level input seems worth it. Basically I am marking time, waiting, hoping, just depressed to lose the friendly simple quality Cool Running site.

(I was a top sales person to all my running friends to use CR - so easy to sell what you love and believe in)

I am not bothering to list the improvements needed, but the PB report is top of my list as urgent.

Thank you!

H Gill (59) Bendigo. Australia.
