The transition from CR's viewpoint

Hi folks,

My name is Dave Camire and I am one of the co-founders of Cool Running. Kevin Molloy and I started this business almost thirteen years ago and our mission has been to supply the best information and tools available and offer a friendly environment to our users.

For those of you who have been with us from the beginning, you have witnessed the enormous changes and growth in our site. I fondly remember our first month of operation we received 200 hits and we were thrilled. During our busiest month this year we received over 89 million hits and the site welcomed over 2.3 million visitors. Now that's growth!

However with growth comes challenges and one of ours was supporting an infrastructure that would keep pace with the enormous amount of users we were servicing. Kevin performed miracles by keeping the CR server operational despite the increased load; however band aids will only carry you so far.

By the end of 2006 we were frequently being forced to reboot our system. This often took place in the early morning hours so hopefully it was not obvious when our site was down. Our running logs as designed were also unable to handle the load. We also knew the existing software would not handle many of the features users were requesting on a regular basis.

So with our server maxed, our software prehistoric and our registration system broken we knew it would be impossible to continue the status quo. So with the help of the Active engineering team we embarked on an ambitious project to fix it. BTW both Kevin and I are still heavily involved with Cool Running. I serve as the senior editor of the site and Kevin is a frequent technical consultant. I feel strongly that we (Cool Running and Active) have not abandoned our original mission.

This brings us to today. Our goal was to establish the most stable, feature rich, robust community and tools for our community. Overall the transition went well, but we all fully recognize that there are serious issues that need to be addressed. We are listening to all the feedback and working hard to respond with solutions.

I would like to ask that you just give us a chance. Rest assured there are many folks at CR and Active that worked nights and weekends to manage the transition and are now redoubling efforts to get folks to a good place. I sincerely hope that you will stick with us and show your continued support as we work through this transition.

Thanks for listening,

Dave Camire

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint
Why is active charging for the C25K program? Did the original author of
that program get any financial gain in this? no he did not. That is too
bad. He wrote it and should have full rights to do what he wants with
the program. That is just criminal in my book.

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Dave, I recommended your C25K program to hundreds of people on a couple different online diet sites that I frequent. All of them would have frequented your site.

I helped about ten people complete the program successfully talking with such joy about becoming a runner.

The one now runs about as much as me and loves running as much as me.

In this post I want to say both sincere thanks for what you have offered these people I have gotten to know.

But unfortunately I also have to say it ends there and I'll be point folks to Jeff Galloway or Hal Higdon or something else.

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Dave, it was three years ago I did your C25K program myself.

In the last year, I've put in 1,100 miles, run my first marathon, and managed to get 1st in my age bracket in two different 5Ks.

Deepest and sincerest thanks for what you have done for me and for the runners I know and for the running community at large.

My rants on this site in the last few days are not in spite of this shared passion for running, but because of it.

If you could get the Active guys to put back up your log. Do their best keeping it up and running for a while (I've spent 17 years in IT so I'm familiar with what stuff like this really means), and then do what I suggest in that other post here in this forum, I think you guys could have something incredible and builds upon your personal legacy.

Best of luck.

And deepest and sincerest thanks.

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Thanks for posting. People hate transition and change. No surprise there! I think all the "complaining" is really a positive thing as it shows how passionate the CR Community is. A great group of people that I'm sure Active wants to retain. I, for one am going to start using this site with the intent of staying. I like my "friends" and don't think moving to another site is going to solve anything. That being said, I really want the CR training log back. I'm sure you guys can provide that. Maybe give the CR members the option to have their original log or your new one. That is my Christmas wish!

Happy Running Trails!

Shell

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Dave... ????

Why are mods and customer service folks stating clearly in other areas that C25k WILL REMAIN FREE?

Will it? Or won't it?

This is just example number 1,000 where everyone on your side needs to get consistent on messaging (say the same thing) and then consistently deliver it. You don't state here that C25K will cost users money, but merigayle's question does and you don't refute it.

Please. (I also wrote a detailed reply to this in Boomers)

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Purelyshell, you indicate folks don't like change.

While yes that is a truism, you might want to go read the forums over at runningahead.com. the CR refugees over there are saying the wished they would have switched sites long before and love the ease-of-use and discovering the new features.

Let's try to apply some critical thought to this here.

And do our part to make sure we get the best possible tools.
