The transition from CR's viewpoint

Hi folks,

My name is Dave Camire and I am one of the co-founders of Cool Running. Kevin Molloy and I started this business almost thirteen years ago and our mission has been to supply the best information and tools available and offer a friendly environment to our users.

For those of you who have been with us from the beginning, you have witnessed the enormous changes and growth in our site. I fondly remember our first month of operation we received 200 hits and we were thrilled. During our busiest month this year we received over 89 million hits and the site welcomed over 2.3 million visitors. Now that's growth!

However with growth comes challenges and one of ours was supporting an infrastructure that would keep pace with the enormous amount of users we were servicing. Kevin performed miracles by keeping the CR server operational despite the increased load; however band aids will only carry you so far.

By the end of 2006 we were frequently being forced to reboot our system. This often took place in the early morning hours so hopefully it was not obvious when our site was down. Our running logs as designed were also unable to handle the load. We also knew the existing software would not handle many of the features users were requesting on a regular basis.

So with our server maxed, our software prehistoric and our registration system broken we knew it would be impossible to continue the status quo. So with the help of the Active engineering team we embarked on an ambitious project to fix it. BTW both Kevin and I are still heavily involved with Cool Running. I serve as the senior editor of the site and Kevin is a frequent technical consultant. I feel strongly that we (Cool Running and Active) have not abandoned our original mission.

This brings us to today. Our goal was to establish the most stable, feature rich, robust community and tools for our community. Overall the transition went well, but we all fully recognize that there are serious issues that need to be addressed. We are listening to all the feedback and working hard to respond with solutions.

I would like to ask that you just give us a chance. Rest assured there are many folks at CR and Active that worked nights and weekends to manage the transition and are now redoubling efforts to get folks to a good place. I sincerely hope that you will stick with us and show your continued support as we work through this transition.

Thanks for listening,

Dave Camire

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Dave,

First of all I want to thank you for everything you have done for the running community. Cool Running was a tremendous public service. I made a lot of new friends and went from couch potato to finishing in the top 25% of the finishers in my last 3 races.

You should sell your old computer system and software to Active. It loaded faster than this board does. It looked better. The running log worked and had far more features. Their log that you have to pay for isn't as good as your free one was.

Your board remembered who I was and I didn't have to relog every time I came back. I could find the forums I was interested in every time. Here it is hit or miss, whether I can find the Cool Running section.

Active had months to get ready for the change over, and should have tested it before they made it live. We had months of promises of a "seamless" transition.

The transition has been anything but seemless, it has been an unmitigated disaster. I "transfered" my log from cool running to here 3 days ago. I was told it would take 24 hours to transfer the data. I still can't find it.

I can't find many of my old cool running friends. I can understand if say another user had the name Dave Camire. Active could have called you Dave Camire. cr for cool running. Instead they wind up with a name like joeschmoe047.

When we complain here, we get what looks like a response that looks like boiler plate written by a lawyer in public relations. You and your partner treated us like humans and even friends.

Thanks for everything you have done and are trying to do.

Re: The transition from CR's viewpoint

Thank you Dave and Kevin for starting Cool Running. Your site is what helped me begin my running career and improve my life. Without you guys and your wonderful site I would be miserable, fat and probably divorced now.

I hope Active takes user comments and your knowledge of your customer base and turns this transition around. I didn't use the log much so I have no isuue but that's most of what I am reading: WHERE'S MY LOG? I can understand the frustration. If I lost my notebook I'd be lost. I am already lost here. I can never get to th Cool Running community. Even though it's saved to my favorites. Once I log in that's it! And I always forget to log in right away. Loading takes forever. I always have to hit th "reply" button twice to get my text space to show. Very annoying!

I already stated in previous posts that I was willing to give the transition time. Yes, Active had plenty of time to get this right. And with a large enough company and more than enough money, this debacle should not have happened. But for now, I have become a two-forum gal. I am hoping CR goes back to being the close-knit community it was. If Active has you and Kevin and is actually willing to listen to you and us, CR should come back full force!

Happy Holidays!

Kris
