Re: Sunday Dec.2 Boomer Runs
OK, if I can't report a run of my own, I'll report my son's... DS#1 is 24 and lives in Oakland, CA. He was an excellent runner in college but has been very intermittent on his running since then. Recently has started to give it more focus in his life. Back in Oct, on 20-25 mpw he ran a 2 mile fun at a sub-5 pace so he hasn't lost it all. I think he may have secret ambitions of a marathon. (Maybe I inspired him.

) Anyway, this morning he decides to do a long run, a 19 miler. This is pretty much new territory for DS#1. Things go well the first 90 minutes. At 1:40, sudden fatigue. Can you say "glycogen depletion"? Still a ways to go - what to do? Aha! A Burger King! Son dashes in grabs a packet of catsup and a handful of ice cubes and is back on the road. Short-chain carbs help but not for long. Liver glycogen OK so devises plan B - alter course to swing by favorite local bakery. Strolls in - helps self to a slice of the sample de jour and strolls out, (The nerve of some people! At least he is a regular customer.) walks and eats bread, then runs home. Elapsed time
incl. "refreshment breaks": 2:24 for 19.0 miles on the hills of Oakland (7:35p). Synopsis post-run: "I've been pretty much useless since this morning, Dad." Ah to be young again! DS#1 lesson's learned: plan ahead for water and fuel on long runs, listen to Dad on post-long run recovery tips. Dad gets: several minutes of joy talking to DS#1, a smile for the rest of the day, and several good ideas for Christmas presents for said son. Life is good.
