I hope that you'll let us know what your itinerary is once you get things set.

BTW, I've heard the Anchor Steam Brewery tour is terrific, if you're into that. A great combo is the AS tour with the requisite beer sampling, and then saving some room for food at nearby Goat Hill Pizza.

I just did the Emerald Nuts Across the Bay 12k today. May you SF Marathoners have the same weather: mostly clear, low 50s. This course is tough, with all of the climbing to and on the Bridge.

Re: San Francisco Marathon, July 29.
I ran the half in 2005. Great race. The hills aren't severe. You run early enough to get back to your hotel and shower easily before checkout if you are leaving SF that afternoon.

The only complaint I heard was that the food for the full marathon runners was chincy and heavily rationed. I think they have fixed that problem.

Great course and city. I would love to run it again some day.

Re: San Francisco Marathon, July 29.
glad to have found this thread...I'm strongly considering the half (most likely the 2nd half.) Sounds like it's not a PR course, but tolerable if you train on hills (I train in Central Park!) and worth it for the scenery (and for a nice run while on vacation!)

Anyone have any advice with regards to quasi-affordable hotels in the area? thanks

Depends what you mean by quasi-affordable and how close you want to be to the start/finish line.

Since you're considering the 2nd HM (you'll be bussed from Justin Herman Plaza to the start line in Golden Gate Park and then obviously run back to the other side of town), you'll want a hotel that's reasonably close to the busing area/finish line, but you don't have to have it super close.

Your best bet may be boutique hotels and places like The Mosser on 4th Street, which has an $89/night single room rate, provided you don't mind sharing a bathroom (it is however about 3/4 of a mile from the busing area/finish line.)

If you can afford $159/night (the SF Marathon Rate) the SF Marriott is in the same general location as the Mosser

Come on out to San Fran westendgirl! - I'm hoping all my running in Central Park helps with the course out west too.

Re: San Francisco Marathon, July 29.
Let's get this thang started again! I have NO marathons between now and San Fran so the focus has shifted!

Please remind me of Mark Twain's quote about the coldest winter he spent was a summer in San Fran - that will make me feel much better about slogging through these hot summer runs!

Looks like I'm doing a half & half pacing thing at San Fran - starting the 3:00 group and running with them through the half, handing them off to another pacer to take them to the finish, and then waiting for the 3:10 group and running the second half with them. Kinda good because pacing 3:00 would be tough and the 3:10 pacer has a bit of an injury so we can better cover both times by splitting it up. The guy who will run the 3 hour group to the finish will be tapering for a 100 miler so he doesn't want to do the full.

Looking forward to it - my wife & older daughter will be coming out with us to make it a nice long weekend.

Hope everyone's training is going well!

Moon & Maria You guys are doing the full or half?

Sis #2 and I will be running the HM (1st half) as I believe Moon will be too. W T

You sure do have yourself an interesting pacing arrangement for this bad boy - you'll also have to hustle up to get back to the full course from the slight diversion it takes from the HM course around mile 12.

Real question is who's doing the Giants baseball game and garlic fries post-race?!?!!?

Yep, barring anything stupid, I think I'll at least be able to do the HM as a training run (at least, that's what my massage therapist tells me.)

I'd rather spend time as a tourist somewhere other than a baseball game even if it does mean missing a chance to see the freak break Hank's record. Now as for the garlic fries... are you buying? <HR>

Hey, you don't need to go the ballpark to get the garlic fries; Gordon Biersch brewery has garlic fries and is pretty close to the finish line (though I imagine it will be absolutely packed)

Re: San Francisco Marathon, July 29.
Made my hotel arrangements today (Westin SF Market St). I'm starting to get excited about SFM. I ran the course with DK in the E50 series, so I can't wait to rehash with a couple thousand friends.

Coming into town on Friday, leaving Sunday. I'm from SoCal. If there is a big group gathering at an eating establishment, I wouldn't mind joining especially on Friday night.

See you out there in the hills of San Francisco!
