Re: Marine Corps Marathon
I carried a water bottle last year and wore a HRM, both no-nos at the Army race. In fact, I carried the water to about mile 23 before I ditched it. I find it easier to refill on the run and sip as necessary than to run with that sugary slop sloshing about. (how's that for alliteration?)

I am really jealous of you all who are running this race. My son is stationed nearby and my goal is to go out and run in it while he is there, maybe next year OOH RAH!

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
Thanks PacerChris! I have seen so many schedules and didn't know if I should do 20, 22, 24, or all 20's or go up to 26. I do have them scheduled 3 weeks apart. THANKS! Are you a pacer for the race? Do they have PACERS in this race? Just curious. I just want to cross the finish line without feeling miserable!

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
Hi all,

I'm registered and this will be my FIRST marathon as well. I actually thought it was a lottery to get in...oops! I'm also trying to juggle grad school and triathlon training in addition to work so it will be a challenge to stay on top of my training.

I've joined a training group so that I have support on the long runs. Hopefully, it will add structure to my training as well. I'm pretty consisent about executing when someone puts a plan in front of me.

I'm nervous and excited...but more nervous right now....I don't feel nearly fit enough to be attempting this but it's early so I probably have adequate time to train.

Looking forward to future posts!

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
newMIrunner - PacerChris gave you some good suggestions but just to clarify - make sure you do your longest run one month before your marathon and then do the taper. Running the longest one too close to your marathon isn't a good idea.

I am a fan of "I've gotta run AT LEAST 24 miles so I can feel mentally okay with the race." However, physically, you don't need to run that many. That is why so many training programs only go to 18 or 20 miles at their longest distance. I'd suggest doing at least a 20-22 and at least three of them as already suggested.

By the way - they have had pacers at this race in the past so I anticipate they'll have them again this year.

FlyNhigh - this has always been a lottery in the past. I was kinda shocked when my registration went through as normal. You'll do great - just don't overdo it. A training group will be lots of fun (so I hear! ). You'll be fit enough to run the marathon if you stick with some sort of program. Don't beat yourself up over missing a day here or there or even missing a long run once in a blue moon - you'll get there and you'll be prepared - trust me!

My training doesn't officially start until June 25th (remember, I've already done a marathon this year) but I'm loving the fact that I can go out right now without training in mind and just run to my heart's content WITHOUT a watch!

Where are all of you staying while you are here? I live locally so I'll just be taking the metro in to the race that morning. However, I thought we might get a group together maybe for breakfast the day before. Thoughts?

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
The Clif Bar pace team will be there again this year - I won't be runnig as I 'll be resting up for NYC the following weekend. But go to Clif Bar's website ( http://www.clifbar.com/play/marathon.cfm?location=paceteam[/URL" target="_blank"> ) and check out the info on the pace team - top notch pacers to run a nice steady pace and give you tons of tips throughout the day.

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
I need to get my tail in gear and book a hotel for this race. Any suggestions? Should I try to get one near the finish, start, or elsewhere? Thanks for any and all advice!

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
The start is at Arlington Cemetary, which has a metro stop. I live a few miles outside the beltway, so i will be taking the metro there. Anyplace in Roslyn you could stay would be good i think; the finish is basically in Roslyn, and looks like it's about a half-mile from the start. Alexandria or Crystal City will probably be slightly less expensive, maybe less crowded (but I am pretty sure everywhere you go will be crowded on race weekend). Just make sure you're near a metro and you can get pretty much anywhere.

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
This is pretty good advice but I would guess Crystal City will probably be more expensive than Rosslyn depending on which hotel. Alexandria would be cheaper just be sure to be near the metro. Just FYI: Hotel rates are OUTRAGEOUS so be prepared! I run a corporate housing business so I know all about my competition!

Jsprick - where do you live? I'm in Sterling.

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
How is your training going??? Mine actually STARTS this week! I'm doing a short training session since I ran a marathon in March. It feels pretty good taking the break right now - I just hope it doesn't bite me in the butt later on!

jsprick - I know exactly where you are - I used to live in Reston and took that "back road" to Vienna/Fairfax all the time! If you live in that cute "little" house that I LOVE right on that road I'm going to scream!!!

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
DCDiva, I am actually a couple turns off of Hunter Mill (Crowell, to Victoria Farms). The address is Vienna, but most people probably think of it as Reston.

Training for me has been pretty good; this will be my second marathon, but the first was Richmond in 2002.

All I know is I love this one house on that road and I WILL live there some day as soon as it goes on the market! Are you part of Reston Runners? I was thinking of joining them but they run too late on Saturday mornings. I like to be out by 5-5:30 a.m.

I know it doesn't seem like much but I had a really good 6 miler yesterday. The last 2 - 2.5 miles was pretty much all up hill. I tried to push it faster the last mile and was pretty successful. I need to start getting in some speed work for this marathon. With it being my third marathon I actually want to shoot for TIME. How often do you all do speed training? Once/week? Twice/week? Do you go to the track/treadmill or do you just use your watch and know your pace well?

Someone asked me the other day if I run the entire marathon. I told her that I didn't but there are tons of people that do. As a first, second, third time marathoner I'd think that most people do stop and take a walk every now and then (at least to get water). As an elite I'm sure you never stop and walk. What about those who are "in the middle" (anyone here?) do they stop and walk or attempt to run the entire thing? I mean, I ran 22 miles without stopping during a training LR so I am SURE there are people out there not stopping during the race - don't you think???

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
I have ran 14 marathons and feel like I'm a midpaker. If I've trained correctly, I only walk through the water stations to make sure I get the water/gatorade down and not all over my face and shirt.
If I haven't trained correctly I end up walking a lot towards the end of the marathon.
Hope that helps.
