Not sure about any of you, but I am very anti-wind! I'd rather it rain. Anyway, the temps look reasonable. One more last minute worry: Are there porta potties on the route? I didn't see them listed anywhere on the website. For those who have run this in the past, can you help? Thanks!<HR>

If I remember correctly, last year there were porta potties at just about every aid station. Seemed to be enough to go around.

...

just checked the online map and clicked on porta potties and up cam 12 porta potty locations plus the start and finish . The appear to be co located with each water stop, not aid stations (but I bet they are there too)

Flying out in the morning, and the weather is looking better all the time. Good luck to everyone.

Ha. That's funny.

I can't wait to run around hand holding chains, six people wide.

On a more positive note, I am feeling good about this race. We got long runs of 18, 19, 20, and 21 under our belts, and alot of good speed work. I am just hoping for a little better weather than Chicago experienced. Although, anything is better than running in Florida.

I get ornery on race morning. If the purple people or sixabreasters line up in front of me in the first corral, I am pretty sure I wil run over them.

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
Breezy is back. Ugh. I think I'm bad luck for windy marathons. I ran MCM last year, which was windy, and then Frederick in May which was even windier.

Right now accuweather says 15 mph from the NNW at 11am and noon. Route 110 runs NW, so we should be running into a 15mph headwind for the last couple of miles. Should be a cross wind, or even a slight tailwind, crossing the 14th street bridge though.

Temps looks very good though. 56 at 11am according to accuweather.

To compound the issue, there are no formal corrals this year. You are expected to "self seed" yourself. Like THAT's going to happen

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
Good luck to everyone running MCM this weekend - I wish I was going to be there as it's got a soft spot in my heart (my first marathon - 12 years ago!). Hopefully the breezes are less vicious than last year! Make good use of the Clif Bar Pace Team, especially if it's windy you can draft off them! They aren't the widest bodies around, but it's better than nothing!

I need to meet up with my friend at the race start. Neither of us have ever run this race before nor do we live in the DC area. Any suggestions regarding a good spot to look for each other?

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
I have been looking at the maps, trying to figure out how the actual course is going to be, and one map (interactive one) on the website has a slightly different route than the other one (pdf). They take different routes from Hains point to VA, going on different bridges. Does anyone know if we will go over the Rochambeau bridge or the Arland Williams Jr memorial bridge?

as far as meeting up with someone before the race, I don't really know of a good place. maybe at some monument around the cemetary?

You need a 3:15 pacer!

Seriously, how much extra time you bank for 2 miles solo into a 15 mph headwind (up route 110)? I'm figuring that if (by some miracle) I'm on pace at that point that everybody will be slowing down and there won't be anyone to draft off of.

If you're on pace in the last two miles, you ain't gonna be drafting. Keep picking people out to pass and whip yourself to the end. Knowing that you're precariously close to BQ, I wouldn't risk blowing up early and try to bank more than a minute or so. BAA already gives you a 59-second cushion, so you can drop 30 seconds/mile off your target pace over the last four miles and still make it. When I squeaked in, one of my mantras over the last 5 miles was "I'll never forgive myself" as in I'll never forgive myself for putting in 21 quality miles and not giving it everything I had from there on in. (The other mantra was "it only hurts, it won't hurt me")

For my money, the problem with 110 is that it's so dang ugly and boring. There's nothing fun about running on a freeway.

On another note, there's nothing more satisfying than going through the packet pickup on a Friday morning before the crowds take over.

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
That final tretch isn't easy - try to bank your time from 8 to 20/22, but not more than 5-10 sconds per mile. Ifyou start to get tired late in the race, talk yourself into pushing hard for 1-2 minutes and then settle back down into your 7:20-7:25 pace - that little push will make you realize that 7:20's are easy by comparison. It's a mental game - build your bank up to ~90 seconds by 21 and then try to hold 7:30 for one more mile...at 22 tell yourself the same thing, then again at 23. Keep telling yourself 1 more mile - if you can get to 24 and still have 1 minute, you can back off a little and rest for 1 mile and then finish strong.

Gmaclin- I had remembered your XL a while back for Boston and had attempted to mess with it to work with MCM. I am quite glad you did it, because yours actually works. Thanks a ton. Itll be a fun toy to play with today.

James & Chris,

Thanks for the advice. I made a 3:15:00 pace band with gmaclin's spreadsheet. It seems to fit right in with your advice. Here's hoping I don't rip it off in disgust during the race

Thanks,
Greg

Re: Marine Corps Marathon
Much against my better judgement, I'm running tomorrow as well.

Not as trained as I would like but I'm going to go slow (about 30 minutes slower than the McMillan pace calculator estimates and run it like a training run.

Agreed to go at the last minute to support a co-worker who is probably in worst shape than I am.

Best of luck to all. If you're watching, Peach, you're going to do great. I won't be cheering on the sidelines but I'll be cheering for you.
