I am running the NYC marathon this year for the LIVESTRONG foundation- Lance's Army
I get to meet him and everything! So cool. So cool.

I lost a friend not to long ago to cancer and I am running in His honor.

So...
Anyone else going to be there?
I hear it is crazy to get out to the starting line.
Any advice?

Re: NYC Marathon

I'll be there for the 2nd time and cannot wait!   I didn't have much of a problem getting to the start at all ...you just have to give yourself plenty of time.  I live in Midtown Manhattan and boarded a bus in front of the Public Library on 5th and 42nd to Staten Island.   You arrive there early (like before 6:00 a.m.) and then plan to chill/camp out on Staten Island until the start at 10:00 a.m.   You can purchase bus tickets with your registration.  HTH!

Re: NYC Marathon

ditto that.  nyrrc transports the bulk of the runners to staten island w/military like precision from midtown.  basically, all you do is stand in (very long) line and it eventually leads to the next available bus.  they take it from there - straight to the drop off at the runners village.  good luck!

i'm in, this will be my first. my cuzin ran last year. her best advice get there early. the police are strict on security about letting people get to the fort when coming over the bridge late. they send lots of people back. dress warm and expect to peel off layers. she brought an old coat and sweats while waiting at the start line.

Re: NYC Marathon

I'll be there - I'm hoping Lance gets his buttocks in 2:45 shape because I know that what MY goal is (big PR for me - I'll be ready, though!).  I know how I'm going to introduce myself to him on the course:
"Hi Lance, we have something in common. We both can't stand your ex-wife!"

(Note - I'm KIDDING. I'm not a fan of her writing, she kinda comes off wrong to me in interviews, but I'm sure she's a wonderful person...)

I ran it in 2000 and from what I recall, I plan to park my narrow arse up on the start line ASAFP because it's wicked crowded. And lots of non-English speaking people there that, despite them broadcasting instructions in every language, seem to mis-seed themselves by a good bit. Plus, lots of Europeans who are more accustomed to pushing in a crowd than most Americans are (I used to live in Europe but I dropped that habit quickly upon returning to the US - it's not rude, just different than Americans are used to). Thankfully I'll have a good seeding but I still want to get as far up front as I can (within reason - I'll stop moving forward when I nudge Hendrick Ramaala and Paul Tergat outta my way!).

Of course, I hope everyone comes out to watch the men's Olympic Marathon Trials in Central Park on Sat. Should be a fantastic race and an awesome way to get pumped up before MY race!

Happy training, everyone!

No, the non-runners are not allowed on the buses or in the start area.  They won't need help with the layers as they can put them in a bag at the start for pick up at the finish.

Re: NYC Marathon

They handle it a bit better know. They actually have fenced in corrals for the lower number (I think number lower than 4000). So if you put down 2:45 as your estimated time, you would probably be < 1000 or in the 1000s, so you should have no problem being up front and getting cross the line in under 10 seconds (especially if you are in the green start). I was 35xx and was across the start in 21 seconds. There was weaving the first 1/2 mile but after that it was fine.

You will have NYPD and NYFD trying to get in front of everyone, but that another issue....

My husband and I are trying to get in too (throught the lottery) - anyone know the chances of BOTH of us getting accepted?  We're in CA so if we both don't get in, we won't go.  And we WANNA GO!!

I'm sorry to say that the odds are pretty long that you would both get in. I've seen a lot of speculation on what the odds are for the lottery, and my guess is about 1/4. If that's right, the chances you and your husband will both get in are 1/16.

If you want to look to the future, and are willing to part with some bucks, you could try to take advantage of the "lose three times, you're guaranteed the fourth" rule.  If you both lose three times, you'll both get the fourth.  If one of you gets in before then, you could defer to the following year(s) until the other is in.  That can get expensive, as I suspect you don't get a refund with you defer.

As already stated here your chances of both getting in aren't exactly great but hey who knows it just might happen. If it doesn't and you both really, really want to run New York then why not shoot for next year by running a qualifying half marathon time.

These are the most recent half marathon qualifying times:
Men
18-39 2hrs 55min / 1hrs 23min
40-49 3hrs 10min / 1hrs30min
50-59 3hrs 30min / 1hrs 40min
60 + 3hrs 45min / 1hrs 48min

Women
18-39 3hrs 23min / 1hrs 37min
40-49 3hrs 38min / 1hrs 44min
50-59 3hrs 52min / 1hrs 50min
60 + 4hrs 13min / 2hrs 00:30min

* Your age on the day of the qualifying race. You must have met the appropriate qualifying time between January 1, 2006, and May 1, 2007, and included the race name and date on your application.

These are this years requirements and will probably not change for next year. Hope this helps.

Re: NYC Marathon

Lottery odds are not great but not as bad (at least based on last year) as you might think.  Here is what it says on the NYM web site

quote:

In 2006, nearly 50 percent of all U.S. lottery applications were accepted, and approximately 25 percent of non-U.S. lottery applications were accepted.

Thanks for the link. I just can't understand how they say 50%. I thought they said there were 90,000 lottery entrants last year. There are only about 37,000 slots. A good portion of those slots go to guaranteed entrants/charities/locals, etc. I looked at lists of lottery entrants last year, and saw a lot more "NO"s than "YES"s.

Regardless, good luck to all.
