Re: Philadelphia Marathon Thread (For those doing it)
Hi Everyone,

I am running the Philadelphia Marathon. I completed Quebec 8/26 in 3:49 with plenty of walking towards the end. I just ran the Adirondack Half in 1:26. I need a 3:10.59 to qualify for Boston. I am going to push Philly hard. I was on pace for Quebec with 18km to go. I knew I was off pace and saved myself for Philly. I recovered great and better than 07 Boston. I want and need to make it back in 2008. I have the Maine half on 10-7. I am looking to lower my half PR from Adirondack. Adirondack will hilly on Rt 9. Well see you there. Good luck to everyone on training.

NE Ridgerunner.

Re: Philadelphia Marathon Thread (For those doing it)
bump

Just wondering if this thread is officially dead because everybody migrated to that 30's thread over there, if you know what i'm talking about.

My goal race was going to be the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon on 10/07, but the weather is supposed to be a bit warm. So now I'm taking Philly more seriously. I'll probably use Mohawk as a trainer and peak for Philly.

So wassup with everyone else?

Re: Philadelphia Marathon Thread (For those doing it)
Oh yeah, forgot about this thread! Is El really opting out of Philly? C'mon El you can work it out!!!

I've been burning the candle at three ends - work is nuts, I'm moving to Providence on Oct 24th, but running is going well. Got another PR in the Providence 5k.

Went down to Philly a couple of weeks ago with some of the guys. We ran the last 20 miles of the course just to get used to it. No great shockers. It's pretty flat, with a couple of minor exceptions. There's a hill just past the zoo as you head into Memorial park. Nothing that bad, but it's there.

There's another grinding hill after the turnaround as you come back out of Manayunk. As you get back on to Kelly Drive, there's a quick steep climb getting onto an onramp.

The out and back on Kelly Drive is a little dull, but it should allow us to try and find each other on race day!

Re: Philadelphia Marathon Thread (For those doing it)
For some reason, I always see that out and back section on Kelly Drive as my "now I know I'm going to do it" section. I think that's b/c my one and only marathon DNF was a little ways down on Kelly Drive not long after the Art Museum. So when I pass that point, it's as if I'm passing a psychic barrier. I've finished two Philly Marathons since the DNF, but I'm still somehow relieved when I pass that 15 mile mark. Then when I return along Kelly Drive, I get that "back to my stomping grounds" buzz, since I do so many runs along Kelly Drive--so I'm thinking, "cool, almost home now!"

Not sure yet which of the three races I'll do this year. I'm not ruling out the marathon yet, but my knees have been iffy. So might go with the half marathon. I have the long runs to support it, and I've done the 8k before. The half would be something different.

But no decisions until the NERRC 25k. BTW, for Philly people and anyone who can get there, that's a great race--much more low-key than the marathon or Philly Distance Run and usually used by marathoners as a tune-up. Friendly bunch of people and never crowded. Won't have the marathon's bells and whistles, no timing chip (but accurate timing... Runner's Advocate does a great job here), no big expo, but you get a mock-t long-sleeve shirt. And since the course is along the bike paths on the river drives, it shows quarter mile marks, so you can adjust pace as needed. It's on 10/28, so it's a good test run. You can add a few miles before and after for your twenty-miler, or have it be a stand-alone test of your marathon pace... or both! Guarantee you'll appreciate the organizers...

Off to Delaware tomorrow for the Delaware Distance Classic. Good running to all!

Yes, indeed I remember that ramp well from last year. After hitting the wall at 16 I was finally starting to feel a second wind, until that hill. It was like a punch to the gut. Walked up most of it and trudged to the finish after it.

As it turns out I'm not doing Philly this year, though I had been considering it earlier. I'll do it again sometime, though, and when I do intend to kick the **** out that hill.

Re: Philadelphia Marathon Thread (For those doing it)
I know there's been some talk here of the hills...I train in Central Park in NYC so hopefully I'd be okay? Also, for those of you who do Philly regularly....do you think the organizational issues of last year will be resolved? It seems like a lot of the problems have been addressed in the "What's New in 2007" section on the website, at least.

Sorry for jumping in with only a cursory review of the posts. I ran/walked the meltdown of Chicago on Sunday and now I'm scrambling for another marathon that I can run in its entirety (although I did get all 26.2 in Chicago before it was cancelled). I was going to do the half in Philly regardless.

If you can handle the hills of CP, you will be fine in Philly. I train in NYC as well. Just did 12 miles in the park today as a matter of fact...

Re: Philadelphia Marathon Thread (For those doing it)
I registered yesterday for Philly after a less-than-stellar experience in Chicago this weekend. So Philly will be my first full marathon, since I only finished 19 miles in Chicago.

I know I'll probably be one of the runners bringing up the rear (I'm aiming for a 4:30), but I'm really excited to finish all 26.2 miles!

The course at Philly is mostly flat. There are some hills in University City and a fairly big one in Fairmount Park at around Mile 11, then the aforementioned ramp in Mile 21.

Re: Philadelphia Marathon Thread (For those doing it)
Just saw that Philly is now offering a discount to Chicago Marathon registrants. I'm in for the half, with a plan to transfer to the full if my legs feel good during the next two week's runs. I was surprisingly sore even after walking a good deal of Chicago.

Re: Philadelphia Marathon Thread (For those doing it)
I was originally going to run the 1/2 with my DW. After the debacle in Chicago, I am probably going the switch to the full. Hopefully I will have enough left in my legs to go for a BQ (3:20).

FYI - for those who are not aware.

They have changed the start time of the half and full to 7 AM.

Re: Philadelphia Marathon Thread (For those doing it)
I should probably come clean and say officially I will not be making the trip this year. I am just not in good enough running shape to justify the travel and lodging expenses.

Everyone have a great run. Moving the starting time up sounds like a good idea, summer does not want to end this year. Still 77 degrees in northern Vermont on October 22. The bugs have not even been killed yet by frost... That said it will probably snow.
