Re: New Las Vegas Marathon
As much as I swore that I wouldn't come to this event until they fixed it, it does indeed look like I'll be there this year.

Though I will run it slowly. I'm doing the Death Valley Marathon the day before.

Re: New Las Vegas Marathon
srlopez - I pray that you can post that they got it right this year after last years debacle. I would love to come back and try it again - The course was very runable -

I will wait and see what you have to say - maybe 2008.

Re: New Las Vegas Marathon
Mile markers miss marked - They did not place any of the 1st 5 miles in the right spot - I stopped paying attention after that

Mile #25 was marked as #24 -

I found no food afterward (2:55 finish)

The starting coral was screwed up. 1st elites (Ok) 2nd all Las Vegas Road RUnner (LVRR) club 3rd sub 3:00 - I saw at least 3 of the LVRR people knocked down (A lot of slow people to pass)

Lots more - But those are the 1st 4 that come to mind.

Re: New Las Vegas Marathon
BTW - All those things are fixable

The course is generally a fast course

The 1st 6-8 miles are really cools (Strip and Fremont Experience) After that is was a little Blah.

Las Vegas - Is easy to fly into and out of and Fun non-marathon stuff to do.

Re: New Las Vegas Marathon
Larry, the problem is that this race isn't managed by the people of Las Vegas. It is managed by an org called Devine Racing. They also do the Salt Lake City Marathon and now the LA Marathon.

I hope they fix stuff too, but I'm not holding my breath. If they do, that'll be wonderful.

Devine has made a mess of LA since they acquired it, but rumor has it they did a much better job with Salt Lake City this year.

Re: New Las Vegas Marathon
I ran the 1/2 last year and can attest to the mess it was, even though I didn't run the full. With all the compliants, the race director emailed everyone to apoligize, so I think they will take things seriously this year. I've decided to give it another try, but I'll still only do the 1/2. Even for the 1/2 marathoner's, the entertainment stopped around Mile 6 once we passed the Freemont Experience. The return course is the backside of the Strip, kind of a seedy area of mainly strip joints and pawn shop's. Hopefully they'll have a little more entertainment on the back side of the race and of course, better entertainment for the full marathoner's for sure. I'm not sure if the course itself changes this year but the marathon course has some undesirable areas. Weather is generally cool to cold, and wind can be a factor that time of year. The amount of participants is very large, I think around 20,000 all together ran the 1/2 and full last year. It's an early start, still dark outside. I tried to book my hotel room, the host hotels (Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand) are around $200 per night. A little on the pricy side, but it seems Las Vegas has gotten expensive no matter where you stay.

Re: New Las Vegas Marathon
Im going back to Vegas. I

The only real problem I had was the mile markers. Im certain that will be fixed this year. (Hopefully no new problems come up).

Oh yeah--one other problem--Had to climb the railing and slide down gravel to get to the starters area--needed better access..Easy chance for injury

Other issues that didnt really bother me--but did bother others
1. cheap $5 tee shirt--yeah for $100 or whatever the entry was, I would have expected better..
2. Food..Apparently there was a gap in the fodo. I finished in 5 hours and found the food and it was fine.

3. Starting slots--had running club up front along with the faster runers--bigger issue for the faster runners than for me.

But-It is Vegas--and I loved the course. Running down the strip and through downtown is awesome. And I may be the only one who enjoyed the long stretch towards the mountains. The stretch where you turn away from the mountains before you head back and can see the strip hotels getting closer is dull..but no biggie.

Re: New Las Vegas Marathon
It's sort of disappointing to hear about all the problems. I'm also counting on the race organization to fix them. It's never good to get bad publicity for a big race like that.

I just signed up for the half and am looking forward to it even if it isn't going to be perfect. My sister lives out there, so it's a nice excuse to make a visit to Vegas and the timing is good for me.

Let's hope they learned from their mistakes last year!

Re: New Las Vegas Marathon
I ran the half in 2006 as well. And I don't understand all the complaints about lack of entertainment during the second half of the race. There's nothing more entertaining and more Vegas than running thru the strip club area of town just as all the strippers are heading home from a long night! Good times!

Re: New Las Vegas Marathon
Well, I was going to post a question about the Vegas race and weather or not I should give it a go.
Maybe I'll wait until the race directors sober up?
