Re: Rock and Roll Arizona
I've signed up for the half. It will be my first time doing this half, and only my second half ever. I did the Lost Dutchman earlier this year. So it will be nice to not have the hills we did on the Dutchman.
I'm very nervous about the number of people in this race. I am not the best at dealing with crowds. So we'll see how I feel.

Re: Rock and Roll Arizona
Mr. procrastinator that I am, have not registered for this run yet. Does anyone one know if there are any "promotional" codes that are still in effect? No big deal but thought I would try and save a couple of bucks.

Had a nice 16 today. Nice an slow. Going to try and do 1-18 & 1-20 before the half. It may be a little overkill on these long runs just doing the half, but hopefully will give me a decent base when starting training for my next marathon.

Salty - Know what you mean about the crowds. I felt a little claustrophobic at the start, but once things got rolling it was a blast. If you plan on using the shuttle, give yourself plenty of time. Bring some throw-away clothing so you can stay warm before the race.

Shoot Tommy....I wish I had read this a few days ago.... You can try RWSAVE10 if you want. I think it expired November 30...It's good for 10 bucks off...

Glad to hear you're running it again...I see more and more people out running in the QC Wash on the weekends. Hopefully your knee is doing okay.

Running 16, 18 and 20 for a half? Geez...Makes me feel like a slacker.

I just did 8 this past weekend, but will run 10 on Sunday. I just got a quick 3 in about an hour ago....Probably not even worth getting out there, but it makes me feel better.

So, why wouldn't a 3 mile run be worth it? With just a little over a month to go, I would think any run has some worth? I still favor running before work which means I'm out there on the roads @ 3:30am. and, depending on when I get out, sometimes can only run my short loop of 3.71 miles. I love this distance and usually run it twice a week.

The knee is doing great. Don't want this to sound like an advertisement, but I had run out of my fish oil and all the joints seemed to start creaking. I swear by this stuff!

Re: Rock and Roll Arizona
...sorry tommy, don't know of any codes valid now. did you register?

and azred, i agree that every mile counts. after a couple of years of build-up, i'm running 7 days a week; but three are recovery runs. i just take them slow, try to smile, and relax. i aim to try to feel better after the run than before the run, and it usually works! if a 3 mile recovery run makes you feel better, then mission accomplished!

we're in the thick of it right now, eh? 2 1/2 more hard weeks, mileage peak on that last one, then a three week taper. soooo sleeepppyyyy..... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

edited: tommy, i got 15th place at the bobbi olsen tucson half last weekend. beth ellickson from your hometown passed me with a mile to go, and i couldn't track her down. rats. i'm happy though, i think i'm on a good track for pf chang.

Re: Rock and Roll Arizona
I got an email from Elite Racing a couple days ago that gave a $10 discount code for any of their marathons, including the RNR Arizona Marathon. The code is HOLIDAY and is valid until December 10. Good luck in Phoenix, I enjoyed it last year but this time I will be running indoors in Minnesota instead.

Re: Rock and Roll Arizona
mc- Outstanding on the 15th. place! My running buddy took 77th. I think he finished around 3:14XX.

After getting a good solid month of 40mpw., I feel refreshed and stronger than ever, so I'm hoping for a PR for the half. I've decided not to do the 18 & 20 in preparation for the half. I think it would be more beneficial to run a couple more 16's where instead of running them at an even, steady aerobic run, pick up the pace for the last 4 miles.

Any thoughts about this strategy?

spinach - Thanks for code. I'll give it a go.

Re: Rock and Roll Arizona
I'll be there! I signed up for the full back in July. This will be my first Marathon ever. I met my weightloss goal of -70lbs back in may and needed something to keep me motivated. I started running in Oct '06 to lose weight. I lead quite the couch potato lifestyle for ~15 years or so. (never going back)

I'm not fast but I am steady. Been doing the beginner marathon training plan since October. I've been putting in 140mpm since ~august.

One exeption to the training plan. I don't plan on doing the 26 miles week after next. I have a 24 for this saturday and I will do another 24 in two weeks. I want the race to be the first time I hit 26.2. :-)

See you guys there.

for me, for a half, 18 and 20mi runs would be overkill... i used to do 16 mile hilly runs regularly, and we'd finish with a fast last 3 miles, downhill. that seemed to help enough with my strength for the end of a half. it's a shorter version of mcmillian's fast finish long run idea. i think you're right to do those 16 milers instead.

after this last weekend's half, i find i really need more speedwork (even for the upcoming marathon)... like miles and repeat 1ks. today i ran a favorite of my coach, alternating miles, running a 6:17 and recovering with a 7:35, for 9 miles. those kind of workouts seem to pay off for me at the half marathon distance too.

another consideration is that on 40mpw, a weekend 20miler is 50% of your total, which is a lot. i usually don't run 20s until i'm up near 60mpw.

anyway, just my two cents. good luck with the rest of your training!

When I was training for my first marathon, my average mpw was 35 for the 18 weeks prior to the race. My base going into that was about 20 mpw. I was running (ave.) 3.5 days a week. Never had heard about the 20%-30% long run rule of thumb, so I just slowly upped (1) run per week. I had managed to get 2-20's, 1-22 & 1-24 mile runs in. Some weeks my long run was about 80% of my weekly mileage.

The only reason I can think of "why" this didn't injure me, was the fact that I was fully and completely recovered when I did these long runs? I know this is not recommended by many, nor do I recommend or advocate this approach, but since I didn't know any better I somehow got away with it.

I'm still Tommy14277, but Active wouldn't let me use it... said it was already taken... Duh! So, I have to change the number on the end of my name and earn those little "gold" stars all over again. Anyway, Just in case there are any last-minute-procrastinators in the crowd and haven't registered for this one, you can still use coupon code: SWAROCKS and recieve $15.00 off. Good luck everyone!
