OK without power

Would the reaction from the rest of the US be different if this storm damage and power outage was located on either coast or if this area was populated by minorities?

If it's OK to be without power, where's the story?

Re: OK without power
There was no news story when my parents went without power for more than 2 weeks last year (which also meant no water since they have a well) and that was on the West coast. I dont think people are being intentionally ignored. More rural areas always get last priority over metro areas when there is a big disaster.

Re: OK without power
I remember a similar situation here in Indiana in the early 90s. Some people in remote areas went without for several weeks. Repairs start in the city and move out, for obvious reasons. Ice storms are pretty scary.

The power companies do not have a vendetta against certain groups of people. They try to bring the power back up ASAP and for obvious reasons start with the most populated areas.

Re: OK without power
The whole thing is really a shame. I hate to hear when that happens to anyone, for any reason, because the next time it could be me or my loved ones. It must be a huge task of fixing all that damage.

Re: OK without power

Perhaps, if it looked like a nonwhite area was being neglected while whites were being helped.

That said, a week without power seems pretty normal for a storm of this magnitude. Am I wrong about that? I hope the elderly have warm places to stay.

The 'good' thing is that many rural and semi-rural folks have other options, especially if they live in older homes. There are fireplaces and firewood, and older folks have canned goods and preserves. My mother was a country girl, and goes into "Little House" mode in times like this. When an ice storm knocked out the power in my hometown, she cooked meals in a cast-iron skillet in the fireplace. My father couldn't live without his TV, so he and my uncle got a hotel room in Savannah, GA. :D

Re: OK without power

Iowa did have major power outages from the storm as late as the end of last week. There are still some isolated areas where power hasn't been restored, though not nearly as wide spread as in Oklahoma. We may get candidate to spend a lot of time here, but I think they draw the line at climbing power up poles and fixing power lines.
