Arrived at Woodstock on Friday at 4pm. Race meeting and check in at 5pm. Wanted to get a bite to eat but didn't like the local selections......burgers and fries. yuk! Ending up eating a box of 12 clif gingerbread bars washed them down with a couple of beers. lol!
Hotel was uncomfortable. They were working on the wiring outside in the hall, my lights flickered a couple of times also. My thermostate was stuck at 60. I didn't bother trying to get another room. Ending up only sleeping an hour of two at most. Watched CSI reruns and other nameless movies all through the night.
Not much of a breakfast selection in Woodstock. Typical of a highway rest stop town there was a Micky Ds. McGriddle or a slimmy saugauge bisquit(automatic barf food for me). I ate 3 peanut butter bars.
Race started promptly at 5am. Went out at comfortable pace. The air was so humid. About 2 miles my head starts spinning and I develop sour stomach. Thought I soon was going to bent over in a ditch. I decided not to pull over and keep going. Eventually my stomach settled.
First aid station 6 miles. According to the race flyer is was supposed to be 4. lol! Drank a few cups of gaterpiss(I know its good for you but thats what it tastes like) and water. Washed down a couple of succeed caps.
Up up and away. Time for the 2+ mile btch of a climb over the mountain ridge. Decided to go it at a hiking pace. Some were passing me jogging up it. Once I got to the top I slammed down. 6minute mile pace. Passed the folks and jogged up and made time on them that they would not catch me again. Next aid station 12 miles. Washed down 2 succeed caps with about a half litter of coke. ate a banana a bunch of pbj wedges.
Right before the half way aid station another runner and I were talking and jogging and over shot the turn for the last aid station. Someone saw that and drove up and told us to turn around(Half mile added on. oh well whats another 1/2 mile in a 50 mile run). Stopped at the half way aid station felt hungry so I ate probably 2-3 full pbjs, banana, about 8 cups of water. Surprisingly I felt incredibly great. Like I had just begun to run.
Aid station 37 started to feel thirsty. Temperature I think was in high 80s. I was I think the only one not carrying a water bottle for this race. Back up over mountain ridge. I swear the going back over this side is twice as brutle. I was able to power hike up the 2+miles at a little of 4mph. Thought I was going to reach the clouds soon.
I felt like I was running across a desert looking for that oasis. My thoughts were focused on water. water. water. Seemed like forever. I started to feel week and wobley. The aid station arrived. I just about fell down. Volunteers could tell I was in bad shape. They threw cold wet towels over me. I drank probably a liter of coke, a few cups of water, gaterpiss. Ate 2 hotdogs(They tasted so good at this point), pgb wedges, pretzels, a few cookies. Felt a little better. Time to go! I have finish in under 9 hours.
Left aid station and developed terrible stomach cramps. Ate too much and drank too much. Was able to walk +4mph until cramps started to let up. I did the walk/slog combo the last 2 miles.
Finished with time of 8:39. I was a little disapointed but happy at the same time. I could have done a lot better but I think it is a good time for my first 50 and a good time for lack of running experience(I started running exactly a year ago(Memorial Day).
I got home and weighed myself since I felt lighter. lol! 148lbs. I lost 18lbs. No wonder I felt like **** later. I thought I drank a good amount of water but obviously the not near enough.
This was a fun race. Met lots of great people. Aid station volunteers were wonderful and encouraging.
