100 Miler Vanity - I want a buckle!

OK, I've done some decent ultra runs at "middle distance" (50K to 50 miler) and considering stepping up to my first crack at 100-miler this fall.

Open for recommendations - but it HAS to have a buckle because that's the ultimate "ultra schwag", right?!

Considered Arkansas Traveller, but it doesn't look like a buckle run - so what's some other options?

TIA!

Personally I wouldn't have any use for a belt buckle. It's about the only deterrent I have to considering doing any particular 100 miler. But, to each his own ;-)

Do they have a buckle at Bighorn?

If you are prepared to travel there is a great 100 miler in South Africa called the Addo Elephant Park 100 Miler. It is based on the Western States 100 mile race. I did the 50 miler this year which was fantastic. I am doing the 100 mile next year (beginning of may). Details of the race can be found on www.extrememarathons.com.[/URL" target="_blank">

The race is well organised, tough but very scenic and has a great buckle.

Heartlands 100 in Kansas is supposed to be really nice, and has a great buckle.

The Mississippi 50 is a 50-miler that awards buckles.

Or how about "The Bear" in Idaho? The buckles are time graded: gold for sub 20, silver for sub 24, bronze for finishing (or something like that).

Arkansas Traveller DOES have a buckle. They give a buckle to every finisher. If you go under 24 hours, you get one with shiny multi-color enamel paint. The over-24 hour buckles are all brass. Decent looking buckles, but there are prettier ones.

LOTS of 100's and some 50's give out buckles.

Just checked your profile... right in your own backyard is the McNaughton Park 100, they give out a buckle to finsihers.

Indeed, I'm not into belt buckles mostly for gender realted reasons. I have a guy friend who wears giant ones and admits he does it so women will stare at his crotch ;-)

I think I'll be trying AT next year, too. Even with the belt buckle "prize." Sigh.

Are you wearing that Umstead 100 buckle, Merigayle?

Fred (proud owner, but not yet wearer, of the very same version)

p.s. for Kertrou's search: Umstead also gives buckles of various types to all 100 mile finishers.

I wore it once around the house. I love going to race briefings and seeing everyone wearing their buckles!!

My Umstead one is still in the box. In fact, I didn't even know until
my friend (who ran it as her first this year) told me that the sub-24
and over-24 buckles were different.

By the way, are you looking for a "mild" 100, or a very challenging
100, or a brutal 100? (no 100 is actually mild, but it's only comparatively
speaking)

mild: Umstead, Rocky Raccoon
very challenging: Vermont, Western States, Old Dominion, Wasatch, ...
brutal: MMT, Leadville (unless you're good at altitude), ...
ridiculous/insane: hard rock, hot TWOT, Barkley (I think only hard
rock would give a buckle)

Then of course, there's the hellgate "100k" which will take a 100
toll on you (no buckle either)
