Any news from Mohican?

I'm curious how people fared at Mohican this weekend. Must have been hot out there.

I thought of the runners all weekend. It remains amazing to me that people are out there 24+ hours.

Re: Any news from Mohican?
It was a good day (and night) (and next morning). Perfect weather. 81 was the high. At the start it was 55. All with low humidity. Trails were completely dry and the streams were down. Bugs weren't bad and the fire flies were out in force to sparkle up the trees.

Aid stations and volunteers were good as always. The foot doctors at the Covered Bridge were kept busy and helped many make it through.

I think the winner came in at a little over 18 hours.

A couple good emotional finishes from first timers who were looking in pretty bad shape later in the race and were demanding to quit. They had great pacers who wouldn't let them.

I was celebrating my first time too - 28:24ish. It was a good run for me. I ran a very conservative pace expecting bad things to come as the mileage piled up. Nothing serious happened but a few minor blisters that were really annoying.

Lloyd is a running machine. I'm looking forward to hearing his story.

Now it's time to figure out the plan for the Burning River 100.

Thanks Tom.

Weather more favorable than last year. Frank described it well. A dry trail. Certainly, watching you run this course last year helped me out with my race.

I have no clue how anyone can OWN 100 miles. Everything past mile 80 was a different (read: painful) world.

Re: Any news from Mohican?
This is so very cool that, count them, how many Coolrunners ran their first 100M here at MO?

- ltfranke: well deserved. Your focused training paid off.

- MedinaUltraGal: Nice to have dinner with you and Bob. I watched you cross the finish line. The look on your face - priceless. Sorry I did not get to see you afterwards. Bob and I ran near each other before he took off for good.

- erietom: I did not even recognize you in person. You've lost weight and look great.

- Kimba: Sorry on your result, but congrats on your spirit. I really appreciated all your trail reports throughout the year.

I also got see 17yo Michael Hayden again in a race. He's amazing.

Yeah! Ain't the pain delicious! Nothing I know of can adequately describe it.

So, what's next?

Ltfranke said, "A couple good emotional finishes from first timers who were looking in pretty bad shape later in the race and were demanding to quit. They had great pacers who wouldn't let them."

I would have been one of THOSE people. Yes, I did have the best pacer in the world, Wild Bill, whom I am already booking for next year so none of you are taking him -- but, it wasn't totally Bill who wouldn't "let me" quit. It was me -- my own desire -- to finish. (The actual moment: Walt, friend of ours manning the Covered Bridge aid station, with radio in hand -- me on a chair under a blanket -- saying, "Suzanne, are you making this decision." In other words, are you dropping -- and there's no going back on him pulling off my number. NO WALT, NO BILL, NO SUZANNE, NO I AM NOT DROPPING. Get me soup. Let's go Bill.)

It was tough (the last 25 miles anyhow) and I did cry. But my 16 year old was there, after crewing me all night, with her camera, smiling and yelling... and my husband was at the finish ... and Roy... and Tanya... and Sean... and Sharon... and all of my dear supportive friends! How could I not cry.

Race report to come... it's almost done.

Great job, Lloyd, you were so fast...
Kimba... ...

And yeah, Bob, my wonderful husband, 3rd overall! (Got lost in the last mile and was passed in that 15 minutes or he would have been 2nd.) I am SOOO proud of him. Sorry I was so slow.

Great job Suzanne. You came into the Covered Bridge the last time right after me and were not in a good mood. I was hoping you'd take a break and change your mind and keep on to the end. It was great to see you coming across the finish line!

Re: Any news from Mohican?
And thanks for the compliment Lloyd, but remember at the 12 hour PEC in Erie you only saw me from behind as you were lapping me 25 times, and then just a quick glimpse of me from the front as I snapped your photo. :-) But you are right, I did lose some weight since that race... about 9 pounds lighter. I weighed 172 for the 12 hour PEC and I weighed 163 on the Friday morning before Mohican. I've been following the Maffetone Method (low heart rate aerobic base building) for the past 5 months and that burned up a lot of my fat.

Re: Any news from Mohican?
Congratulations to all who finished, and also to all those who had the courage to sign up and have a go at it. I know a guy who trained his gonads off and finished (his first 100 miler) and it took him 27+ hours - that really put into perspective how hard one of those things can be, so for anyone to finish and do so under 24? Big ups to all of you!

I was thinking about Mohican - I paced at Grandma's this year and when I got on the bus you guys were starting. I ran the marathon, hung out for a bit, showered, had lunch, flew back home, went to sleep, woke up and had breakfast, went for a little run with my baby - and you guys were still going!! Crazy - ya'll are nuts! Someday I'll join you...
