Any Other New Trail Runners

Are there any new trail runners out there who'd like to have a thread to keep in touch, help motivate one another, pass along info, etc.?

I post often in the Newbie Cafe (40's On the Run), but there aren't many (if any?) of those folks running trails.

Hi Leslie!

I?m a newbie to trail running. I?ve been trying to get to a trail about once a week (on the weekend) for about the last couple of months. I lurk, but don?t often post, at the Newbie Café as well, but would enjoy keeping in touch with others that are just getting into trail running.

Any more of us out there?

I hope the first discussion involves shoes, good sticking trail shoes. I spent the weekend looking for a pair. I went to Dick's and the 'expert' actually handed me a pair of white fabric New Balance..I said no honey, trail shoes, grippy for rocks and shale beds, drainage... She said right, mam, these are a great trail shoe.
I flipped it over, smooth as could be. I scraped the side with my nail and it snagged. I handed it back and left.

Teva's keep catching my eye in the mag. Opinions?

Hi Leslie, I too am running a HM distance trail run in August - it's actually 12 miles(close enough). I've been running trails since Feb. I now do about 98 percent of my runs on trails as I am fortunate to have several trails near my house. I am running about 20-25 miles a week. When is your HM?

melistic - I have read some not-so-favorable reviews on the Teva's, but they might be good for you. Two cents.

Like Leslie, I'm a relative trail newbie too and in the Northern CA area (3 races this year between 17k - 25k); I'm building up my mileage again after a bout of ITBS, but don't have anything slated trail-wise 'til the fall (I'm actually in sprint-tri mode right now.)

Actually, I'm looking for some new shoes myself; I've changed my stride to more of a forefoot strike (think barefoot running) and the thick heel of my current shoes (Adidas Trail Response) probably won't work now.

From what I've seen on the shoe thread that has taken a life of its own, the Inov-8 Flyrocs might be the ticket, but if anyone else has experience with that or other shoes, I'd like to hear them

Mel- the way i started in my first trail shoe was to find the trail equivalent to my road shoe. Depending on what your road shoe is, there may be one. Then the rest is just trial and error. Unfortunately.

Hi everyone!

It looks like we've got a few of us at least...hopefully more will join us as we go along. I'm in Carrollton, TX (Dallas suburb). I, too can only get to a trail on the weekend, as the nearest one is about a 20 minute drive from me, and that's too far to go for my regular weekday runs. The trail I've run so far is along the northern shore of a local lake (it's called the "Northshore Trail", how creative!), and is about 9 miles from one end to the other. So, it theory, I could get in an 18 miler out and back. So far, the most I've done out and back for 11 miles, but I didn't run all of it. The trail has lots of ups and downs (it feels like alot more ups than downs, although I know that's not possible on an out and back run). My regular street runs are very flat, so I'm still getting used to the hills, plus the irregular surfaces. My husband, who thinks running is boring, has started coming with me, and is really enjoying running on the trail.

I have North Face Ultra 103 XCR trail shoes that I bought at REI after striking out at my local running store. They didn't have my size in the shoe that they recommended for me, and neither did either of their other area stores. I specifically liked these shoes because they have a wider toe box than some of the others I tried on, and my feet are wide.

There is a trail running club in my area called the North Texas Trail Runners, but all I've done so far is take a look at their website to find local trails. They have a few race events throughout the year, so I may try to check one of those out this fall.

Hi there!
I am new to Trail Running...kinda....well, pretty much!
I usually run road races - marathons, half marathons - and now I want to train for an ultra, and obviously those are all pretty much ran on trails. Not to mention, trails are gorgeous! I did run a half-marathon trail in april and absolutely loved it! I am registering for a full this coming September. I too, wonder about shoes....I am a shoe freak, owning about 15 road shoes, but only 1 trail shoe that is alright. Any suggestions?

Hi there. Can I hop on? I used to run trails all the time, but only do occasionally right now. I live in Northern Utah, and have miles upon miles of great trails at my doorstep. My problem right now is that I don't have a running partner, and don't feel 100% safe running in the mountains by myself, so my trail running isn't consistent right now. But I have dreams of an ultra someday (maybe in a year or two - I'm working on my first marathon in October right now).

I run in Solomon trail runners (not sure of the exact model) and they work well for me.

<waving hi at all the fellow newbies>

Hey Leslie - I know, it's been awhile. I've just been busy like all heck. May was a killer month and now work has just blossomed here in June with a huge workload.

My ART therapist has done some amazing work on my ITB that flared up at Muir Woods - I have some friends from CR doing the SF Marathon end of July and I actually might be able to join them and run one of the HMs at a sensible pace.

After that, I think I'll be back on the trail circuit again. I'd love to meet up with you and Karen again on a fall trail race - the only thing definite on the docket for me right now is a sprint-tri in either September or October, but other than that, the calendar is fairly wide-open right now.

I guess my best bet regarding shoes is to simply go to the store and try them on. I've got a few REI's nearby, so I should venture down there to at least sample the selection
