Neo-Trail Runners Extreme Team - Week of 07/22/07

First - If you're new to your thread, Welcome! We love to read new stories, about others' experience, and see pictures.

Second - Speaking of pictures, be sure to check out the last few posts of last week's thread. JJJessee included some awesome pictures with a really great story of that trip. I felt like I was back with my folks all those many years ago, camping as a family and actually enjoying spending time with my brother!

Lorie - Yes, I have a race coming up this next Sunday - 26km - so I'm in the Taper Zone, as my coach calls it. I only ran 8 yesterday in 1:42:22, with the last 2.08 miles in 26 min. I really pushed it, especially on the hills, so today I'm feeling it, especially toward the top of my hamstrings. I was pretty stiff and sore most of the day yesterday, but it probably didn't help that I sat in a movie theater for over 2 hours watching . . . Harry Potter! Yes, I'm a Harry Potter fan. It was a great movie, and I was up until almost midnight last night reading the last book. But I digress . . . .

I did much better yesterday than I did last week. Went back to my old routine and had my shot blocks instead of those disgusting gels. It was pretty humid for our neck of the country, though, and I drank almost all of the 40 oz of water I had with me. Those of you in the mid-west and east would laugh at what we call humid.

I'm looking forward to next week. Seems like it's taken forever to get here. I just have to remember to go out slooooow and I'll be fine.

I got my pics back of my trails. I used a disposable camera, and they didn't come out so hot, but I included in a post below the ones I thought would work. Didn't want to screw up and lose everything I'd typed here!

Have a great week, great runs, and keep the stories and pics coming!

Leslie, the pictures are great. And what I wouldn't give to run trails in Humboldt Co. I just have this thing for osterich ferns and 300' trees I guess. Well here's my run for the day.

Trail Run 7/22/7

I drove through Damascus, Va on US 58 a few miles and parked along the road at Beartree Gap. From here a ¼ mile spur trail takes you to the AT. I headed north under the cathedral-like canopy listening to a piece by Thomas Tallis -"Missa Salve intemerata" on the Ipod. It fit the environment perfectly, awe and solemnity. After two miles of slightly down hill, the AT merges with the Va Creeper Trail near Creek Junction for a mile.

Its 2% up grade to Green Cove on the Creeper. I jogged this slowly keeping an eye on the heart rate.
a rare flat section

Unfortunately I forgot where to turn off the trail to cross Chestnut Mt on county roads. So I ended up with about 3 miles extra. I backtracked on pavement and finally found my cut-off and unfortunately it was paved to the top of the gap. I walked most of these 2 miles but at the top where the pavement ended I flew for several miles down some steep gravel road.

My hydration pack is leaky and I was out of water as I started this section. Thankfully, about this time I happened upon a spring-box beside the road and refilled.
a view of Straight Mt, from Chestnut Mt

Forward a mile or so, I reached civilization in Taylors Valley. The pavement returned and the road flatten a good deal.

I timed out at the Creeper Trail Café, but 20 minutes and 2 chili dogs later I was back on the trail at the base of Straight Mt. There?s a 1000? of climb in about 1.25 miles- I walked it, but at a relatively brisk pace.

The footing here is excellent, surprisingly run-able, but I was trying to keep my HR under 150. It didn?t feel like a 1000? climb. From the top, the AT rolls merrily along the ridge and drops down into Beartree Gap to complete my loop. I stopped Garmin @16 miles in 3:48:48. I thought this was long, but when I double-checked the computer tracks it looked accurate maybe even short. AHR was 143. A few hours later I?m feeling good. Maybe it was the Tallis?.or the chili dogs.

Greg, thank you for the words of encouragement. It helps when the Snickers Bars start calling my name. .

quoted from lorrieg:
"I can swim well enough to keep myself from drowning, but that?s about it. What are the distances for your tri?"

Not too bad actually...It starts with a 5K run, then a 12 mile bike ride, ending with a 150 meter swim. Perfect for a first timer!.

Ed

Fatman, remember, it ain't about the food. Listen to your body. Eat when you're hungry( wait till your body asks for food, growling, etc..), stop when you're not hungry anymore. That is the golden rule. It will come off bro. Your body WANTS it to come off. Listen to it. Hey, eat that snickers if that's what you want. But stop if you only want 1/2 and wait till you're hungry to eat again later. Don't mean to preach bro, just sharing what I know works, not that you even asked. Sorry.
I've GOT to post some pictures! I consider trail running a true gift. I would love to run in some of the places ya'll do. Ran 2:45 Saturday. I'm low heart rate training now to build my aerobic system so my pace has slowed, so I'm unsure of the distance. I would guess around 13 miles or so. This sat calls for a 4 hour run. Can't wait! Fatozzig, good luck in your race. I'll be thinking about you Sunday sending you good vibes (though I'm a christian and don't really believe that'll do anything metaphysically. Maybe the thought that we're routing for you will though while you run). Be thankful we can all do something so simple, but that brings so much happiness and is good for us too!

Hey everyone!

My husband and I decided to try and explore a new trail yesterday, since the one we?ve been frequenting is still under water (we drove by to check on the progress of it drying out, and I think the water is higher on the road leading to the trail than it was two weeks ago!). The new trail seemed to be pretty dry upon first inspection, so we got ready and headed out. It was pretty rough going in many places where the trail was just dirt surface, as there had been lots of bikes that came through when it was still wet and the ruts they left made for very uneven footing. Still, since this is the first trail run I?ve been able to do in about a month now, I wasn?t going to let a few ruts (and the risk of a sprained ankle) deter me. But then, about a half mile in, I knew it just wasn?t meant to be. The trail dipped to a low spot, and there was water covering the trail and the area surrounding it on each side as far as we could see. It was over a couple feet deep, and a lovely shade of algae green. So much for my trail run? I?m glad the rest of you are getting what sounds like some great runs (an great pictures to prove it!)

JJJesse - you must have an iron stomach to down two chilidogs and then keep going!

Leslie ? Good luck on your race this weekend. I can?t wait for the report!

FatManRunning ? Those distances don?t seem too bad, although I?m sure the 150 meter swim would feel like an eternity to me. Is it unusual to have the run first and the swim last?

Oops! I forgot to ask the question of the week in the last post. Someone else is going to have to jump in and start helping me out on these, as I?m going to run out of good questions pretty soon (if I haven?t already). This one?s a two-parter.

Question of the week: What, if any, cross training do you do? Do you feel like it helps your running, or do you just do it for overall fitness?

I?ve just recently started incorporating strength training a couple of times a week. So far, I?m just doing upper body and core work. I haven?t quite figured out if I should do any lower body work. If I do, would it be best to do it on my easy run days, or should I do it on my hard/long run days, so that I then have my easy day after to recover?

Good question Lorr
Since I doubt hotdogs count, i'm ashamedly lax about crosstraining, I'd just about devleoped a situp habit, but fell off the wagon.

Good Luck onyour race Leslie
jjj

i only eat hot dogs when i'm running, promise.

Well, I converted from powerlifting to running so what I do now is tame compared what I used to do last year. I do chins supersetted with dips. I then superset hanging straight leg raises from the chin bar with hyper back extensions. I feel that hits my whole body in about 15 minutes. I was doing deep knee bends, hindu pushups, and back bridgeing as well, but my left knee started acting up so I dropped all that. I like push ups too. I will add hill running and the hindu squats(deep knee bends) after I complete my low heart rate training. One legged squats and lunges and step ups as well all help with running.

Nice pics Leslie & JJJ ! Its fun to get a peek at where you all are doing your trail runs. As soon as I figger out how to do the picture thing on here I will post mine too ! I am hoping to get out there for a nice loooong one this weekend.

Leslie - Is your 26K a trail run ?

Question of the week: What, if any, cross training do you do? Do you feel like it helps your running, or do you just do it for overall fitness?

For overall fitness and to avoid injury, I have always included some cross training in my routine. Generally, some easy weight lifting and stretching a couple times per week. During the 'fair weather' months I will get on my bike about once a week for a long ride. During the winter when I go to the health club once a week or so I will do the stair climber or elliptical trainer. From May - September I usually eat regulars, but once a month I will have a footlong hotdog for endurance training

Hey everyone!

So, I decided to join the North Texas Trail Runners Club this past week for a couple of reasons. First, they have a couple of trail races coming up this fall that sound fun, and are only open to members and guests. Second, I was thinking that their ?members only? Yahoo group discussions might give me some insight into what trails in the area might be runable (since the one I?d been running on is still under water). I was correct. Based upon the discussions, I?ve got a couple of new trails to try out this weekend. Neither of them is as long as the one I was running (about 2-3 miles instead of 9), but that?s better than nothing.

Also, one of the members had posted some photos[/URL" target="_blank"> from their recent canoe trip?along the trail that I?d been running on until the flooding about a month ago. One person predicted that this trail would not be runable until at least 6 weeks after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers decides to let water out, and currently the outflow is almost non-existent. Hopefully, one of these other trails I?ve read about will be a nice alternative until then.

Lorrie

edited to fix the photo link...I still haven't got cool code totally figured out!

fatozzig -

Very nice, a PCTR ! I have read about those. Sounds like it will be a great event. I hope you do well and have fun ! We'll be waiting to hear from You afterward

I, however, try not to wear anything 'new' on the day of an event ... ya just never know what might rub you the wrong way. Have you tried the Race Ready style shorts ? They have pockets around the waist band ....
Lots of little goodies fit into those pockets.. including the perfect size ziplock snack bag which is great for carrying ID and some emergency tissue. The other pockets are good for gels or advils and such stuff.

GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN !!
