Trail injury...please help!

Hello,

I figured this was the best place to post this since it's a trail related injury. On several of my most recent nighttime trail runs, I have had some painful encounters with rocks that I haven't seen on the trails. What happens is if I don't see a rock and then the front of my foot is on it, it creates an angle in my foot that causes really bad pain. If I see it, I can contract my muscles and prepare for it, but if I don't then it's just the flex of my ankle dealing with it. The pain occurs right on the front of my ankle where it flexes.

Additionally, I have gone to the podiatrist and he was less than impressed with the lack of flexibility (like none) in my ankles (tendons).

I'm wondering if this is an issue that everyone encounters and I should get used to or is it a direct relationship to the lack of flexibility in my ankles?

Thanks!

Chris

There are many ankle strengthening exercises you can do to get those tendons more resilient, as well as more fluid. Many people use a wobble board to get ankles up to speed as an option:

If you don't run uneven terrain regulalry, you will suffer the slings and arrows, especially on nighttime runs! Do you use a headlamp or flashlight?

Chris,

Have you injured your ankle before - like a bad sprain? I get this pain too, but it is because I rolled my ankle severly last year - bascially tore out that ligament across the front of the ankle where it hurts.

If it gets too bad the neoprene ankle brace helps. Of course good stretching, strengthening and a few trips to the physical therapist would work too, but who has time for that when there are trails to be run?

C-,

I may have had the same thing. My foot met a rock very early in my stride. My foot was basically retracted, toes lifted high, yet i still tried to push off of this rock to avoid falling on my face. I had serious pain right in front of the ankle going a little bit down into the foot and up my shin, ankle was stiff for weeks. I've been doing more ankle rotation and toe grabbing excercises (grabbing things with my toe) and it's loosening up. Good luck, but be patient as I find injuries like these take months to work themselves out.
