HEY !
where is ever'body ??you
been?Hey hey everybody! Thanks so much for the congrats. I'm not dumping y'all now that I'm a big, bad ultra runner. It just took me a couple of days to get back to the computer. Monday I drove home all day from VT, 7.5 hours, and yesterday I had to work an 11 hour day and was swamped from the 4 day weekend I took. I can't give a full report right now, or even a lengthy accounting of my impressions as I need to be more diligent about my work, but when I get home tonight I'll try and give a blow by blow. Let me just say it was a lot of fun, at least the first 35 miles. It was a beautiful, beautiful course. I spent most of the day looking at the ground right in front of me but did see a lot of beautiful views. The view from the top of the mountain at mile 20 was awesome with the valley below filled with clouds and fog and the peaks rising above them behind. Gorgeous. At one point I was overcome with gratitude and yelled out, "Thank You!". I rounded a corner and there was a runner looking at me kind of weird. I said don't worry, I'm just talkin to the Lord. He continued to look at me like I was weird. Maybe I am, I don't know. My feet still hurt but the muscle soreness is beginning to fade thankfully. I can walk normal for the most part now.
Right after the race, I was wondering if I wanted to continue to do this kind of thing anymore. I couldn't enjoy the scenery as I was too focused and began to think maybe I should just go back to backpacking.
Enough about me. You're right runNYtrails, let's hear from everybody else. What'd y'all do over the weekend? Fatozzig, where are you?
Thank for the start runNY
Way ta Go Greg. Your running with the big dawgs now.
We gotta hear more.
The early part of last weekend invovled bicylce-backpacking, a 10k race, and volunteering at the Iron Mt 50M Trail Race. Details Here[/URL" target="_blank">
The next day more bicycle about 8.5, then about 5.5 run/walk on the AT and 5 back to the bike on the rail-trail, then ride home. It was warm so I stopped for a dip in the creek, but it was too cold for comfort.
I gotta go, but I've got a coupla clips I'll try to link you to.

Hello Gentlemen - I'm here! Just haven't been on a trail for awhile. Probably won't be for a couple of more weeks, either, unfortunately. 'Til then, it's the hard, cold pavement for me. I may be able to hit the Arcata Forest next Saturday - my old tried and true trail system. At least I can't get lost there!
Greg - Congrats on your 50, and I can't wait to read the report.
So is it pretty much just the four of us in here now? I'm the only chick?? Damn, I feel special!
Have a great weekend and happy trails!

Hello.
Leslie invited me to come over here. I run more trails than pavement, but I am not an ultrarunner. I ran for a solid hour ONCE, but had to backtrack after a non-running related injury. I am simply a newbie who is fortunate enough to have a trail system less than .25 miles from my front door. I started running the flattest sections and then gradually worked in some hills. I am getting better at running those uphills, but I still need to learn/practice NOT leaning back on the downhills. I don't ski, so this may take some time.
I ran the trails twice this week, but my run tomorrow will be on pavement. I am running my first 5K next weekend (the 13th) and this will give me practice for that. To sum up my trail running attitude:
I like the scenery and strategy of trail running because it is easier to keep my mind engaged. It is difficult for me to "let my mind wander" as I run and the extra mental effort that trail running requires keeps me from counting my steps (can you say OCD?). I do not expect to do long runs in the near future.
Regards to all,
Kitrin
Welcome Kitrin. If trailrunning is new for you, you're in for a world of fun.
Welcome home Leslie,we missed you.

Hellooooo there !
I am back from my long weekend on the trails in PA and NY !
I had a great time on some wonderful trails but boy were they
hard !
On Friday I did a trail in the Allegheny National Forest. Its called the Tracy Ridge/Johnnycake trail ... part of a network of trails that add up to 33 miles. I did about 15 or 16miles and it was quite difficult. The terrain was rugged ... mainly single track with lots of roots & rocks and many, many large felled trees which really slow you down. There were deep ravines and a few creekbeds which were mostly dry. A few sections were fairly easy going but for the most part, it was one of the more difficult trails i have done. The blazing was pretty good but there were many sections thru deep woods and brush with no real established trail ... that makes for slow progress and lots of backtracking for me. I was out there a pretty long time and not really prepared with adequate hydration. It was a long day !
Saturday was just a hiking day with a friend at Allegany State Park. Only 5 miles but it was kind of slow going. One big climb and descent and then an easy stroll through some large interesting rock formations called the "Bear Caves".
Yesterday I did a short section of the North Country Trail which led to the Conservation Trail which is also congruent with part of the Finger Lakes Trail in NY. It was an out and back route which added up to about 8miles. Again some tough terrain for running , similar to Friday's adventure, but the trail itself was much more established and easier to navigate. A rolling course in the woods, no real change in scenery or views but an enjoyable jaunt. The weather was brutal with the heat and humity here and 8 miles was really all I could manage.
Will post a link to pics in Photobucket later in the week if anyone is interested.
I am ready for some rest today and looking forward to some easy days on local trails for the next week or so ... !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/biggrin.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/biggrin.gif|border=0!
Welcome
Kitrin
! Tell us about the trails You have been doing.runNY,
Thank you for the welcome. I have been a bit of a slacker lately. When I run, it is usually on the canal portion of the canal trail that is used during the Auburn Triathalon. Here is a map:
http://www.auburntriathlon.com/longcourse/run/runmap.shtml[/URL" target="_blank">
There is no way I am going to run 13.1 miles (at this time), but I am walking distance from the start area and the trail is very well used (at least the canal portion is). This past May, my sister (swim), her husband (bike) and my uncle (run) competed as a team. Watching them and the world class athletes compete inspired me to get my rear in gear and do something with my body that I had not done before.
The day after the event, I went out and ran 2 miles or so, using the markers from the triathlon as a guide. I walked the steep uphills (you can see the elevation on the maps underneath), but really enjoyed the experience. That hooked me and I kept running through the summer. I could not have done it if I did not have a canal full of cold water near to splash myself when I heated up. Thus, I became dedicated to the trails. I am running my first 5K this Saturday.
I will be out your way at the end of this month. I arrive in Syracuse on 27 Oct and plan to run the Old Erie Canal trail while I am out there. Perhaps I can make a practice of running canals all over the US? I will be back again from Thanksgiving to mid-December, but who knows what kind of running conditions I will find then? Those wonderful trails on the Tug Hill Plateau will be cold, to say the least, maybe even under a little snow. We’ll see how dedicated I am. I bet I head for the treadmill instead.
All the best,
Kitrin
What's everyone up to this weekend ?
It's fall and time for some serious trail tramping so
get out there and frolic !!
Splash around in the sea of leavesKitrin
! Is it a road race or
Ha. But I see from theJJJ
, whatchya been up to? havent seen any pics from you lately, where have you been ? Hopefully you are too busy having fun on the trails to post them !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|border=0!What's up. I've been too tired, lazy, depressed after the VT50 to write a report. I also can't remember large chunks of the race as I was so internally focused that I missed alot of it. It was kind of a blur. I can tell y'all what the ground looked like in front of me for 50 miles!
I've been trying to get my training back in gear after fits and starts following VT. My feet are inflamed with a wicked case of PF in my right foot. I put em both in ice water for 10 minutes last night which I'm planning on doing for the next 1-2 weeks. So, tomorrow the plan is to hit my normal trails in the Wissahickon Gorge. I will bring my camera. I ran in there on Tuesday, though I had a fever and it was a miserable run. I staggered through the woods losing the trail a couple of times due to the leaves. Maybe I'll go out to Evansburg state park, a new place, and do my 4 hours there. Trying to keep my long runs up as I may run the Stonecat50 on Nov 10 just for S***'s and giggles then knuckle down for winter base building. RunNytrails, get your miles up bro and next year we can run the Fingerlake 50 together. You too Jesse as I think you're in the PA area too right? That's supposed to be a wonderful race. NY has got some real beauty and good races.
Kitrin, welcome and good luck. If you like to spend time in the woods, you can join our little sub-community. We started this as fledgling trail runners/hikers and welcome those who want to join. Bring your camera. I haven't posted any pictures yet but am definitely going to change that. We opine about the beauty on our runs, but pictures really spice things up. Give it yer all in your 5K. Don't quit! Push hard.

Ha!! Gotta love margaritas!!! At least I wasn't stupid enough to let my hub talk me into getting in the water. "Come on! It's not cold!" Yeah, right. We're in Oregon, it's raining, it's the Pacific Ocean - - IT'S' COLD! And I don't do cold water. Nope, nada. I am not a Labrador. Is my hub? No - - he's just stupid.
(okay, not really, except when he's intoxicatED)

OK
Gregolowe
I will try n ramp up my miles for next year
I have actually done the FL50's run a couple times, the 25 & 50K, as well as many other of the Finger Lakes Running Club races. They are all great events on some very nice trails . . . challenging but not killer. I have also done the StoneCat 50 that You mentioned. You will enjoy that one. Its a nice loop course, not too punishing.
