The trails seem just right for me ... they are beautiful, fun and technically challenging tho i don't think they compare in difficulty to some of the other NE races ... as far as c l i m b i n g. Hope yer feets feel better and that You can get out there this week end !!

For a real stroke of beauty try Minnewaska or Mohonk parks especially this time of the year. How about the Escarpment trail in general or the race in July. I work the finish line for this little puppy. Just a dinky 30k with about 9,000 feet of roots and rocks.

I live near Woodstock, NY and there are incredible trails all over the place. Sure I/we get whomped with taxes but when I'm on the trails I consider it a fee keeping so much of it wild.

I will admit I'm a little tentative with hunting season. Too many NYC folks coming up with big guns looking to shoot anything that moves.

Hey fattie. I haven't checked in here for a couple of days. I think your instincts about the socks are correct. Heat, moisture, and friction lead to blisters. Good socks can help eliminate the moisture. I use smartwool real thin running socks. I did all of my trail running in sandals and NEVER had any issues with blisters. I attribute that to the breathability of the sandal, letting moisture escape. So it may be your shoes too. You may want to opt into a show with more mesh. Don't use shoes with Goretex either, or any waterproofing for that matter. You know you lose a pint of sweat through your feet a day? So, it sounds like heat and moisture buildup in your shoes. They may be too loose too allowing slippage in there too. So, shoes and socks sis may be the ticket. Good luck.

"Fattie" - Not sure I like that shortened version . . . I am female, so we're sensitive to those names, you know.

I'm gonna go for a sock change and look for SmartWool. Katemd also recommended the old tried and true duct tape. I'll give that a try this weekend until I can get some new socks. Oh my . . . I must go shopping!

runNY,

I am heading out to Syracuse on Saturday and will be in the area until 6 Nov. Do you have recommendations on where to find a good trail to run? I will end up all over (Watertown, Syracuse, maybe Fingerlakes). I will see what I can find on the web too.

My husband and I are thinking about staying somewhere in the wine country near the Fingerlakes during the weekend of 2-5 Nov. I remember you mentioned good trails out there too. According to the long range forecast, it looks like I will have to pack some running clothes for cooler weather.

Cheers,
Kitrin

Just pokin' my head to see what everyone's been up to. This was my last long run before my HM in Monterey in two weeks. And blister central! #$%*!!!!!! I got the book, "Fixing Your Feet" and tried some of the taping techniques w/duct tape, but I need more experience. The thicker moleskin didn't do anything for me. I'm going to go look for BodyGlide today. I'm beginning to wonder if the cover on my orthotics is part of the problem (leather over foam).

Felt really good for the 12 miles I did today, though, so that's a positive. Well, good until I started walking for my cool down. My legs were like, "Um . . . take this for pushing us that hard!"

Happy Trails!

Hello All!

I made it to NY but one of my bags did not. Of course, it was the one with all my most important belongings. It's always that way. This one is in some kind of major void because nobody knows where it is and I arrived more than 48 hours ago. Sigh.

In light of this, I ended up pounding pavement instead of running a nice trail today. I have spent so much time on the phone trying to learn where my bag is that I ran out of time to run anywhere else. MAN! My knee hurts. I hope it gets better soon.

I only ran four about 40-45 minutes. Maybe it was a little depression over what is lost in the missing bag. Maybe it was running on pavement. Maybe it was because I did not run for a week. Whatever the case, I struggled and this was one of the most difficult runs I ever undertook.

From what I hear, a bad run is usually followed by a good one. I sure hope so. I was looking forward to this SO MUCH.

The HM is in Monterey, http://www.bigsurhalfmarathon.org.[/URL" target="_blank"> One of the main reasons I signed up for it (besides a beautiful location) is a local artist makes the finishers' medallions, and ones from past years look pretty cool. The race starts at 7:00 a.m., and unless I completely bomb, I think I can finish in about 2:20. We're going to spend Saturday at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Haven't been there in about 17 years.

My bud, Karen and I also just signed up for our first official marathon. The Bizz Johnson,
www.bizzjohnson.com.[/URL" target="_blank"> It's a flat trail run that's also a qualifier for Boston. No, I'm not planning on trying to qualify - although that would be a hoot! . . . not to mention a miracle.

Other trail runs we've picked for next year are run by Pacific Coast Trail Runs,
www.pctrailruns.com.[/URL" target="_blank"> March 22 - Pirates Cove, May 25 - Forest Park in Portland, OR, and July 20 - Salt Point. We're hoping to be ready to try a 50k at Pirates Cove, but if not, then definitely Forest Park, which I believe her sister, Kate (katemd on CR), will be running, as well. We'll also probably participate in the Trinidad to Clam Beach Run in the 8 3/4, http://www.trinidadtoclambeach.com.[/URL" target="_blank"> They're not doing a HM this year, unfortunately.

Later!

Pokin my head in. Haven't run in two weeks. I have Morton's Nueroma in my feet (swollen nerves-ouch!) and bronchitis. I had flu like symptoms two weeks ago. Right hammie was on the verge of a big time injury. I could feel it comin. It hurt to walk for about a week. Thought it might be wise to stop running for awhile. The 50 miler put a much bigger beatin on me than I realized I think. So, I'm listening to my body and chillin. I'm jonesin' for some running though. Had some nice e mail correspondence with Anthony Krupicka about minimalist footwear. Karl Meltzer interacted with me too about his training. Kind of cool to be part of a sport where you can interact with the big timers...and they're cool. Good luck fattie in you HM. Hope you figure out the blister thing. Katie, sorry about the bag. Why don't you try goin barefoot? May help your knee too. As a side note, this thread could get unweildy if we keep using the same one. Just a thought.
