Thick vs. Thin Socks!?!

I'm training for my first 50 at Umstead. I live right down the road so I've always trained there. Also, I've always worn a medium thick sock. Lately, the more miles I pack on, the more bandaides I'm wrapping around my toes. These socks were fine for the marathon but I'm just wondering are they too thick?? I did my first trail race in them and my toes were eat up!!!! Any advice?

Which parts of your toes are getting hurt? Do you have enough room in the toe box? Have you tried using Body Glide etc. on your feet? If you've been increasing your mileage your feet may be getting bigger. I choose sock thickness pretty carefully to get the right fit; thickness varies depending on what shoes I'm using.

I wear injinji toe socks and then wear a pair of Smart Wool Adrenaline ankle socks over them. Blisters are no more for me... You might look into it?

And since we're on the topic...

GO RED SOX!

Re: Thick vs. Thin Socks!?!
I have some Injinjis because I get blisters between my toes sometimes. They have worked well for me and I even bought my sister a pair to try (bad toe genetics in the family). However, every once in a while, my feet are swollen or something and I have to put on some very thin socks or my toes will be squashed. The toe socks DO bulk up the front of your foot a little bit. I am sure this effect is negligible for most people, but I have fat toes.

I noticed a LARGE improvement in my comfort level when I stopped wearing cheap socks.

Mostly, I find that the sock/shoe connection is very fluid, but important. This sock goes with that shoe and not the other one (I have trail and non-trail shoes). Occasionally, when the moon is full or something, even the tried and true combination must be changed for a day or two.

That is my analysis of my feet. Makes me sound a little OCD. Sigh.

Regards,
Kitrin

You may want to avoid using a combination of vaseline and powder...the two mied together can create an abrasive goo that might actually be the cause of your problem. Similar things happen here in Florida when the sand from the trails gets mixed with the sweat/vaseline/glide on the feet.

See you at Umstead!!!!!!

This is great combo, give it try. It will feel funny when you first put those toe socks on. But run in them before you judge them.

If you do go thick on your socks, use wool socks. Your feet will stay dryer and that helps prevent blisters.

Re: Thick vs. Thin Socks!?!
I use the same combo as Sherpa John... Injinji toe socks under a pair of Smartwool Adrenalin Light socks. I ran the Mohican 100 in mid-June and didn't get a single blister.

No need for anything on the toes or feet, as someone else pointed out, this combo could be causing blisters for you.

I've found that trail shoes need to be a size or two larger than my road shoes in order to have room in the toe box. I normally wear a 11.5 road shoe but 12.5 to 13 trail shoe.
