Thanks for the great suggestions. The race is headquartered at a hotel, so hot food is very feasible. <HR>

As you can see, the suggestions are almost endless. Personally I like Hamburgers, Hot dogs, Pizza(no anchovies) and a staple at one aid station at Bull Run Grilled Cheese. Ice cream sandwiches and ice pops if warm.

My slections aside the real secret is variety. Very few people can eat even their most favorite food for 24 hours. I remember in my first 50 some 20 years ago eating bananas - maybe a dozen of them. It took me a year before I could look at another,

The same for fluids. Over the years I OD'ed on Gatorbarf and Conquest. Either will cause reverse peristalsis after a sip.

To sum variety without going to bizarre yet stay within some financial bounds.

Re: Best food for ultras during a race
During an ultra I only eat what I've trained on for the months leading up to the race, so I don't eat ANYTHING from the aid station tables, so it would all go to waste if lots of folks like me ran your race. ;-) Risking GI issues on unfamiliar foods during a race is just silly to me. I'm not going to throw away 6 months of training for a cheeseburger or whatever that might give me GI problems during the race! So I stick to my Perpetuem and EAS's Myoplex Original as well as minimal use of solid foods such as the Special K protein 'meal' bars. Liquid calories work best for me.

Hi Kate,

I see this is for the 24 hour in MA. I'd be interested in doing the 12 hour. Will there be an issue in picking up my number for the 7 am start? Will it be at the same place as the 7 pm start? Thanks. - Bob

I reccomend a new type of hydration tool called 'AquaJoe'. Rather than transport large amounts of heavy liquids, it is designed to easily carry & dispense sports drink powder. All you need to do is supply clean water. Runners can bring their own choice of powder!
