Training for LV Marathon, should I use Galloway's training schedule?

There are so many postings on pro-Galloway and con-Galloway, I was getting confused, so I thought I'd just ask a specific question.

Currently I'm training for the LV Marathon December 4th. It will be my 1st marathon. I'm not competitve, I will be happy to finish. My current runs are always runs, no walking. My long run is 10 miles. I have 16 weeks to build up to the 26 miles and I'm hoping I can make it.

My question: Should I start to consider taking walking breaks as I increase my miles, or just keep doing what I"m doing (no walking, slower pace on long runs) and see where it takes me? Do I just keep going as long as I can with continuous running and only take walking breaks when I feel like it, or do what the book says and do mandatory walk breaks at specific intervuals? This is where my confusion is... since I'm training, what should I do to train myself to get this distance?

I'm 44 yr old woman, medium build/weight/height. Long run is 10 miles.

Thanks

Technical questions: How long have you been running? How many miles/week? Any running related injuries? Have you done any other racing?

General question: Why the marathon and not say a 1/2 marathon 1st?

Not enough information - The most inportant info is how fast are your training runs? If you can get to 20 mile or longer training runs in the next 16 weeks at a pace under 10 minute miles, then I would say probably not on the walking breaks. If you are over 10 minute pace than most likely walking breaks are the way to go. BUT, there are a lot of individual variations so that is at best a very rough rule of thumb...

I'de also add, that it depends how you feel. If you are run down after 10 miles, and need to sleep the rest oif the day, walk breaks will make you feel incredible. If you think you may need them, I'de try it on your next long run, taking the walk breaks right away.
If you don't notice a difference, then don't use them again.

Re: Training for LV Marathon, should I use Galloway's training schedule?
First, I am not an expert (by any stretch), nor am I very competitive. I have determined over the years that I'm built for distance not speed. Now, having said that, I trained on my own using Jeff's training recommendations. I was able to rapidly increase my mileage without injuries just the everyday aches and pains of a 49yo man who weighs 225lbs. I trained through winter rain and snow and finished my first marathon in late April in 5:09:12. It was a blast! I had no problems and felt great. I ran 3min and walked 1min. It worked for me.

Second, I now average 30 - 35 miles/week and am currently increasing my long run for the AF Marathon on 9/17. I train (due to extreme heat and humidity) at 4min/1min and ran 12.5 miles yesterday in 10:30 pace and felt great. My personal goal is to get my marathon times down to the 4:45/4:30 range and I plan to run a 50 miler next year.

Finally, running is my hobby. I have a "day job" that involves 12-13 hr days of being constantly on my feet and non-stop stress as a cardiovascular surgery recovery RN so I don't need more problems.
Since January I've lost 4 inches from my waste and I now weigh 209lbs. I'm sold. Could I run a marathon....Sure! but would it be as much fun? probably not.

Do the full marathon! Have fun!

YourLoanLady:
Is this your first marathon?
Is 10 miles your longest run?
What is a current 5K time for you? 5Ks can help predict a marathon time. Also, 5Ks can help determine what time of walk break ratio we might suggest you use.
