improving walking pace

I am a big gallowalker LITERALLY 6' 7" 250 lbs currently. I am working on the 250 part.

I realize that the faster I walk during walk breaks the less the break will slow down my times.

Does anyone have any good links on improving walking pace? I've been looking for proper walking form websites and I've also been searching for programs that improve walking pace online. I haven't found any at this point.

Sometimes just concentrating on swinging your arms more will increase your walk pace.

TCO, I've had to do the walk test for a while now, definately concentrate on the arm swing/flail. That will increase your walk speed!!!

TCO ... I am 6'5 myself and started this year at 300+ but now am down to around 230.

I am curious what your normal running pace (min/mile) is and also what your heart rate is at the beginning of your walk breaks and at the end of them - as well as your resting heart rate.

My resting heart rate is around 90 and I am about a 10:00/mile pace. My heart rate easily makes 90% of max within first 3-4 miles run at that pace but seems to knock down pretty good during walk breaks.

Thanks. That is good information to know. I believe you and I have similarities in build, pace and Gallowalking.

I am in the process of convincing myself the benefit of walk breaks is highly correlated with their effects on one's heart rate.

I identify 182 as my MHR and like you I tried to keep my HR at 165 or below for long runs. Over the course of 9-10 miles with a 60-90 second walk break roughly every mile - like you, I experienced a stair-step affect on my heart rate at both entry and exit points to the breaks.

I have also become convinced that this was highly anaerobic in nature - and although:

A) my pace has gradually improved over the 500 or so miles I have logged this year and
B) Gallowalking has clearly helped me in making these improvements

It is my belief that my ongoing success as a runner will be a result of better heart rate training - which oh-by-the-way, INCLUDES walk breaks out of necessity for me not to exceed my Maffetone target of 140-145 bpm.

Thanks for sharing and good luck with your half marathon. I did 2 this year. In the first I "ran" 9 miles with no walk breaks (pre-Galloway) and felt like a total wimp because I ran/walked the balance of the race - finishing in 2:27

Then my wife got me the Galloway book - 3 months later I ran another half marathon using breaks every mile or so and finished in 2:17.

My next HM is in 6 weeks so it should be interesting to see how that one goes.

A poster in the Boomer forum TallRunner is 6'4" 215 pounds. Started at 249 pounds.

I never really established a run/walk ratio in terms of time - typically my goal was to take a walk break every mile. When the miles were clearly marked in races this was obvious. But on training runs, I determined that roughly every 800 strides (counting by one for every left foot ground strike) was a mile. Then I would walk for roughly 70 strides before running again. My best guess was this was probably 10.5 to 1.

Over the course of my long runs (9-10 miles) my HR usually would be right at 165 (higher if there was any uphill involved) toward the ends of the last miles where my walk HR would drop to the 150-155 range.

With that I still had some "kick" left for the half marathon I did in September finished in 2:17 and change.

Right now I am focused on training runs to keep my heart rate under 145 at all times - so my walk breaks (on treadmill) are dictated by when by HRM tells me I need them
