Galloway Helped Me DW Marathon 2007

I have an interesting story abou the Disneyword 2007 Marathon.
As I collect all my thoughts I will probably post some sort of race report as well. I registered for the Disneyworld Half marathon with one of the affiliated race teams. Paid all money for the rooms, (training which I did not need) and admin fees. I have been running for a few months and it was the only way for me to get into the half as it was closed.

(or so I thought) The night before the race my brother asks me my bib number. I look online and see it says marathon.Nothing about bib number. I call my contact at the race team and she says there is an error but I can tell something is wrong. The race team people talk to Disney officials and tell me tough luck. No changes. Even though it is not my fault tough XXit. I was running in honor of my neighbors teenage daughter (16) who was killed dec 30 in a car crash. OK now what. I have read Galloway and used the strategy a little bit in my first few long races 10-13.1 miles. I read the haf marathon book -Not every page but the basics, and part of his full book which the main difference is the race schedule.

My longest run was 14 going into the full. I really wasnt prepared. I go to the booth where Galloway was and spoke to him. First he is a very nice and motivating person. I tell him my story and he suggests 1/1 ratio. My previous half races were 1:59-2:05. He suggested I run 1/1 until mile 20 and if I had something left, just run it in from there.

I was running to finish and did not want to try anything funny. That is what I did. Mostly 1/1 There were some sports where I ran a little more with crowd support but stuck to the program. I did reach the half in 2:30 and thought I would have a shot at 5:00 Personally I feel that with proper training I might be able to run 4:30 or a little faster.

The weather got very hot at mile 20. My legs felt like lead. I had a tough time getting things moving and the last 6 miles was more walking than running. I did finish at 5:35. I want to thank Galloway and I will send him an email. By following his advice I finished the race. Had I tried even another ratio like 6/1 or 1 mile run/1 mnute walk, I am not sure if I would have made it.

Now there are people on the boards here who are great runners and for them I wish them the abslute best, however there are also "regular" people that would like to be able to run half or full marathons. If Galloways methods get people to finish and they are injury FREE I think that only adds to the sport. Most Americans can use some more exercise. I will continue to run halfs but now I am thinking about a fulll in a few months and I will train for it.

I am in South Fla and the winter races have been tough with unusually warm winter temps. I thougt I could make 5 hours in Orlando but even if th weather was cooler, I dont know if the 5 hour mark would have been made. Maybe 5:15. Jeff is a truly nice person and he was helpful in my finish of the race.

Re: Galloway Helped Me DW Marathon 2007
First off - congratulations Robert. Well done!

I also have a DWD story and the Galloway system. I have run several marathons int he past (5) and have never used run/walk (but heard of it - you know the drill). I signed up for the Goofy Challenge (half and full on consecutive days) and have never run that far in tow days.

Ok, so I was a bit worried. Trained nromally for a marathon and had some consecutive long runs but it was still the unknown. Ran a good half (2 hrs) and decided that afternoon to try run/walk after listneing to Jeff speak at the expo. Never tred it before and still don't have much of a clue but did a 4/1.

Short version - finished in 4:30 and ran the last two with gas left in the tank. I can't believe how good I felt after the runs and the next day. I actually ran later that week I felt so good and that's a first for me after a marathon.

Coun't me as a convinced runner. I'm looking forward to getting a couple of books and really learning.

Anyway, thanks Jeff and congrats to you Robert.

Nothing major. Quads were a little sore (had to go a bit slower down steps - you know the drill). I only took a couple of Advil as a pre-emptive. But this was gone by Monday evening.

We were vacationing at Disney. So after I changed, I caught up with my family and we were in the parks walking around that afternoon until 9 and repeated this every day after. I ran on Friday just to burn some calories as my diet went out the window.

I ran 6 today with no problems and back at it for the Nashville full in April.

Sounds like your coach is giving you good advice. Keep on running - I know I will.

BTW - last years DW Marathon weekend was temps in the high 20s and low 30s so what a difference a year makes.

Re: Galloway Helped Me DW Marathon 2007
Just one note. I trained the old fashioned way - sloggin out miles with no walk breaks. I did the 4:1 out of sheer desparation of the Goofy and it worked for great! My average mileage was about 35-40 per week. I'm no speedster just a plodder trying to enjoy a hobby. Sounds like you are on the right track though.

One thing I have noticed is that with DW (after my 4th one)getting to the start at 4 for a 6 am go does not help to create the best environment for a PR, but I go to DW for the fun and "magic". This year I may have stumbled into a method of running marathons more effectively using run/walk.

Keep up the good work Robert. Finishing a marathon is a wonderful accomplishment. Marathonguide noted about 400,000 US finishers in '06 out of a population of 150 million adults. You are in some elite company.

Great. I would love to hear your results and experience.

I am running a 1/2 on Feb 10 and plan to try a 6:1 or more (Is 10:1 doable???). Looking for some advice on this if anyone can help. My last 1/2 was 1:50 and I would like to improve on this weather permitting of course as I look at the snow falling this morning.

Thanks.

Re: Galloway Helped Me DW Marathon 2007
I didn't run/walk on the 1:50 except to take break at one of the water stations to hug my kids and get a drink. :-)

I was hoping for 1:45 to 1:47. I just ordered Jeff's book on the web but it will take a couple of days to arrive. Once here I will check the charts.

Am I off base looking for a run/walk 1:45? I think my base is solid just having finished Disney full and half.?

Just wondering.

Thanks.

I ran/walked the Warner Robins 1/2 this weekend and finished in 1:48:36. I walked 30 seconds at each mile until mile 9 and then discontinued the walk breaks.

Thanks. I guess the walk breaks should be around 20 to 30 seconds to help recovery and still maintain overall pace?

Re: Galloway Helped Me DW Marathon 2007
Interesting. I know they had water issues for later runners and some may have dropped off due to this and the heat. Hard to tell.

Just goes to show signing up is easy but finishing is hard. Lots of variables and stumbling blacks along the way. One of my favorite magazines - Marathon and Beyond has an article called My Worst Marathon/Run and What I learned from it. Some graet runners and ultra types that share their DNF stories.
