Newbie--where to get fitted running shoes?

Hi everyone!!

Please have mercy on the newb.

I keep reading to "run" to a store that will fit me with a running shoe.

Can anyone recommend where to find such a store? Will Footlocker do it?

Sorry, guys. I'm SO confused (but excited!!)

Your profile says you're in Louisiana. Here's an online list of running stores in the state, which might be a place to start:

Note, of course, that this poster makes no claims about what each store offers - call ahead first. You need to ask them how they determine what shoes are suitable for you - in particular, it would be good if they did video gait analysis.

Alternatively, you could post a thread in The Neighborhood asking other LA runners if they can recommend somewhere.

And no, I've never come across a Footlocker that offers a good enough service. They tend to sell shoes for fashion, and to be staffed by bored teenagers who will sell you what the manager has told needs to be shifted. If in doubt, mention "pronation" to them, and watch their little faces scrunch up in puzzlement.

The article is EXACTLY what I was looking for!
(Heh, the lacing and tying is worth the article alone. I walk heavy and fast and friends at work constantly tease me for my laces coming untied)

I have seen many people go to specialty running stores to get "fitted" by an "expert" whose job was apparently to sell them the most expensive shoes in the store. That is typically a motion control shoe, which is generally not what they needed. In my view you are better off joining the VIP club at Road Runner Sports[/URL" target="_blank">. After you join you can order a few shoes, try them out for a month, and then send back all but your favorite. The people that man the phones at RRS are very helpful. If you have wide feet, narrow feet, need a larger toe box or whatever else they can direct you into a brand that is more likely to fit. Should you really want the personal touch of a local shoe store keep trying places until you find a sales person whose first suggestion is something other than a really expensive motion control shoe. Finally, it is likely a motion control shoe will feel really good in the store or on a very short "jog" around the store. On the road, if you do not need one, you will not be happy.

Just wanted to say thanks so much for the advice!!

Went to Tri Running here in Lafayette (from the link), and got fitted with a Mizuno Wave Nirvana.

So excited to start this journey! :Þ

Hey Newbie,

I was running in NB857 but wanted a change. I just got the Mizuno Wave Nirvanas, however, the saleswoman at the running store said that these may not be good for long runs. So I also bought the Asics Gel Kayanos. I plan to switch them up, using the Mizunos for my tempo runs.

Let me know what you think of your new shoes.
