help - cyclocross or 2 bikes

I'm a runner looking to start biking. I keep getting different opinions about whether to try to buy one bike which can do anything or start with a mountain bike and then buy a road bike (or vice versa) if I decide I like biking. I'd like to be able to use it for commuting once in awhile and maybe do a sprint triathlon in a few months. THoughts?

Re: help - cyclocross or 2 bikes

Tough question to answer without more information on what you really, really might do with the bike (like what kind of commute do you have and how often would you do it, how often would you like to ride and on what terrain as you train for sprints, etc), but if you have no interest in riding trails, based on what you gave, I'd say go with a road bike.

Plenty of people take their mountain bikes for Sprints, and even a trace few do Olys with them, so if you were leaning toward a mountain bike because, say, you enjoy trails much more than the road, and your commute is half trail and half road including city, then go for the mtn bike. Otherwise, if you'll never ride trails, go with the road bike. But, if you really do not plan to get into the sport too deeply, where much of your riding might be leisurely strolls with a significant other, who happens to have a mtn bike, then get the mtn bike. If you want to go fast and place well, you must have a road bike.

Re: help - cyclocross or 2 bikes

I don't buy the whole idea of a cyclocross bike being a great "do it all" bike. They make an OK road bike, but they tent to be pretty tall and will not fit you the same way a road bike will, the brakes are not the greatest and the tires will pop if you ride it on rocky or technical terrain. If you plan to race cyclocross or ride on lots of fireroads, a cross bike is a nice option, they also make decent commuters as they can have fenders mounted.

In general, people will buy a beater to commute and get a decent bike for training. I'd suggest giving it a little more thought and get a bike that will best meet your needs without using a compromise solution like a cross bike, unless you really need one. This is coming from a guy with a lot of bikes, including a cross bike, which I really enjoy.

Oops... sorry. I misunderstood your question in my earlier post. I had thought you were asking about a mtn bike or road bike, not a cyclocross or two bikes.

I agree with Jr. Two bikes. One beater for commuting. One for racing.

Re: help - cyclocross or 2 bikes
I commute on a beat up old mountain bike with no shocks. I also raced my first two triathlons (both sprint distance) on it. Did fairly well, too, averaging just over 17 mph in each. The next year I bought a fancy tri bike for racing. I would still like to get a road or cross bike, but no real hurry. I already have a nice mountain bike, as that is my real background as far as bikes go.
