Forum Update

Hi Folks,

I want to give you an update on our progress with the Cool Running forums. I've read several complaints that the progress has been slow and I am hoping you will give us a pass since these two weeks are consumed with Christmas and New Years. Nevertheless we continued working on improvements and you'll begin seeing results real soon.

First and foremost the biggest complaint surrounds logging into the system. This is a bug that we did not anticipate and when we transitioned over. This is our top priority and I want to assure you that we are working on resolving this problem. We have also received other suggestions such as improved navigation between forums, changing the width of the forum page and adding a signatures feature. One of the first changes you'll see is new navigational tools added next week.

We will also be posting polls on various suggestions to gauge their importance among community members. The will help us in prioritizing. I can't promise we can deliver on all of your suggestions, but I promise we will let you know the reason if we cannot.

Our new forum software has a host of features that were not available previously. Below is a list of what is available to you. Our plan is to continue to add to this feature list based on the input we get from you.

  • Blog - We finally have a blog tool and it has some neat features.
  • Rich Text Editor - Great for cross platform exchange of documents. I used it to produce this post.
  • Image picker - This feature allows participants to choose or upload an image and position it within their post.
  • Attach files - you can now attach photos, videos, documents to your posts.
  • Include images - Many of you are already including images in your posts.
  • Embed Active or YouTube videos -I can see a lot of uses of this feature such training videos, race reports, etc.
  • User Profiles & Directory - We had this in our other forum, however it was an add-on. Now it is fully integrated.
  • Search forum contents - Because our old server could not handle the load we had to shut off this feature. The Active search is much more robust.
  • Search for users based on profile content - Another neat search feature.
  • View as PDF - Ability to save the discussion as a printable document.
  • Tag clouds - Provides a visual depiction of tags with the most popular being larger.
  • Tag filtering - View of messages by tag.
  • Personalized RSS - You can now feed of your posts for syndication to other blogs and websites.
  • Personalized email notification - This is one of my favorite features since it lets me know when someone has replied to my post. BTW this feature can be turned off for those who do not want to receive notification.
  • Automatic content relation and suggestion - System automatically searches and displays suggested and related threads.
  • Avatars - You can now include an avatar from our library or use you own customized avatar.

When Kevin and I started Cool Running 13 years ago it was because we were both avid runners - we still are! We want this site to continue being all about running. I promise that we will continue to work to make Cool Running the best running site possible. My hope is that you will continue to keep the discussion on our boards about running since this is the reason we are all here on Cool Running. For those who have suggestions on improving this community please feel free to post them in on the Suggestion Box - we are reading them. And for those trolls who are bent on the destruction of this forum . . . well I'll keep those thoughts to myself since it is the holiday season.http://community.active.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif

Thanks for listening and I'll post another update when we have made further progress. Happy New Year!

I'm not sure whom you're talking about, but this being posted in the Clubhouse is a bit incongruous, don't you think?

Let me get this right. According to your post -- your own words -- you want to keep discussion in the Clubhouse about running "since this is the reason we are all here." Yet you call the CH "An anything-goes gathering place for discussion of all things: great
thoughts, jokes, philosophical musings, silly questions and high-test
camaraderie."

By implication, you characterize as "trolls" all who would post about anything other than running, and further imply that posting about a subject other than running renders one "bent on the destruction of this forum." That sounds as if you subscribe to the GWB substitute-for-thought process; i.e., all who disagree with me are terrorists or their supporters.

If you feel this way, why not simply delete the Clubhouse entirely?

Re: Forum Update

Dave,

The CH is , and has always been a cool place to hang out, but no more.

It seems like you are now calling us 'trolls bent on distructtion'...which is totally BS!

The silence you hear is because many have left because this place is no longer 'home' to us.

If this place crumbles..it is because of you.

But the old site told us upfront the names and email addresses of the moderators, and despite repeated requests, no-one has told us this for the new site. Telling us who is moderating is simply courteous, and Active seems curiously unwilling to do so.

The closest I've seen to an answer was in this thread, where I was given the names, but not the contact details, of the CR moderators. This is less than useless. First of all, it's clear from Geoff's post that not all of the people on that list are in fact moderating at the moment, and second, at least one of the people on that list was not assigned his previous name by Active, so knowing what he used to be called is pointless.

I'd prefer this to avatars and even to email notification (which was available before in any case).

This is all akin to rearranging chairs on the Titanic, which I suppose could have been of some use before the Titanic hit the iceberg, but certainly not now.

Re: Forum Update

I'm going to agree with Dave Camire here in that I assumed the CH was exempt and that his posting was just a courtesy listing of planned changes/improvements for those CH members who don't venture into many of the running sites.

Re: Forum Update

The CH has always been about fun...the other places at Coolrunning was just that-about running. We came into the ch for the fun.

Now that fun has taken us all to other sites that welcomed us with open doors.

Re: Forum Update
I was in the CH from its inception after the Kick invasion and it has always been a mixture of both running and non-running topics. As for your statement on the CH being just for fun it depends what your definition of fun is. Most of the other sites I've seen since the migration of CR to Active will not allow the free-for-all atmosphere that CH did - the curse words, the lack of moderators actually stopping some of the personal attacks, etc, despite the Terms of Service (Use) agreement to join CR. Whether that's good or bad depends on one's view I guess.

The board I've moved to while welcoming CR members who desire to join their board has a specific warning to CR members (as well to their own) to keep things civil.

In the end I suspect things will equal out overall. Some of us will stick with the other boards we have found. Some will stay around here. I was really bitter when Kick invaded CR and despised Dave Camire and Josh Clark for a long, long time. But as I had to accept things change over time for better or worse. Everything is dynamic and with the fast changing pace of the internet you will see lots of boards - running, political and otherwise come and go - once again, some you will swear by and others you will moan when they change formats as needs and owners change.

It may take a little while but I suspect Camire and Active will work out the bugs just as the original CR and Kick did.

Re: Forum Update

I appreciate that you are posting all these upgrades you are going to give us, but how about fixing the big things first:

1) I keep on getting emails about recent posts. I keep trying to shut this feature off. It keeps returning. Please fix it!

2) You have a link below that says "report a bug, provide feedback, and suggestions". Go ahead and click on it. It sends you to a site with more gibberish on it. That site has a link that says "send an email". When you click on the link, nothing happens. Do you want the feedback or not.

3) You have three places to login on every screen. Which one takes you to the forum you are in? Most of the time it logs me onto Active, then I can't find the forum I want, and if I do navigate my way to it, I have to log in again. Can't you fix this pathway?

I would think you would be working as hard as you can to fix the simple things, instead of telling us about future bells and whistles. I am about fed up. Spareribs
