Re: Do y'all have room for a newbie
hey glueman and welcome> First of all Congrats on the weight loss, awesome job. There is a lot of plans, I run my on 4 days a week. The last 2 I did I was running 5 and 6 days a week , would be now if I had the time. The thing is to find what works for you and is enjoyable to do. If it becomes work you'll get burned out. Your wife could probully help you out a lot. What plan does she use? People here will help you and are some very nice and ready to help. Post often and good luck training.

Sheila, the way I get 3 pair is when my first pair got 150 I bought another pair. Not such a strain on the budget that way.

Spicegeek, the HM thread has been around sence I know 2005, not sure how long before that, but I joined it then. Chris was here before me. But I will tell ya Joe has done the best job running it, always on top of things.

Ok Joe it's getting to cold here! I don't even own a long sleeve running shirt much less long paints! I did buy a pair of running gloves today.

Go Gators!!!!!!!!

Slow and steady comes in 29,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Do y'all have room for a newbie

Thanks for the advice. I don't run with my wife at all, like I said about the first 200 yards. When we run a race together I'll be as far back as possible. Strangely though she doesn't like to be too close to the front. She's really timid and doesn't want to seem arrogant. In her last 10 mile trail run she started in the middle and probaly could have finished a minute faster but the trail was so narrow It took her a while to work her way up.As far as training with her, she has never gone by any plan though now she is going to start a Hal Higdon speed plan. She started running 15 yeasr ago in college for stress relief and for the last 8 yeasr or so she's just run about 35 - 50 miles per week and over time she's built some speed and endurance. Now she' realizes that she can't improve much more with that strategy. She's hoping to run the Nashville HM under 7 min / mile. Enough about her though.

In this thread do y'all just post how your runs are going? As you guys and gals are traing for a HM are you trying to become faster or just complete the race? I find that when I'm out running I'm always trying to beat my last time, which isn't conducive to seeing how far I can go. For instance as I stated before I wanted to run 6 miles today but only went 5. I found myself during todays run pushing myself so that I could beat my last 5 mile time. I figured I'd just run the 6th and last mile very easy, but my legs were toast. Speaking of which, it seems like when I run long runs, at the end I'm not breathing really hard or out of breath, but my legs are really tired. Is that standard? I figure weight has something to do with it. I've lost 50 lbs but I'm still at 230 lbs, 5'11". Should I expect the tired legs at thag weight?

Thanks again,

Glue

Go ILLINI!!!

Glueman - look at Joescool messages - he has a link to a calandar and a map for all the HMers and the races we have run / have planned - most people have a HM planned - hopefully you`ll stick around :)

Re: Do y'all have room for a newbie

Glue,

One point about checking out a book -- and I suggest Daniels -- is to understand why you do a workout. A "long run" should be at a pretty relaxed pace. It's the speedwork that requires more. In either case, the pace depends on your current condition. If you can run an HM in 2:00, your pace for each type of workout would be one thing (the books and the internet have charts; this Daniels-based site has long runs at a 10:34 pace and tempos at 8:50) and if it's 1:45 they're different paces (9:21 and 7:50). So don't try to best your time each time you go out, hoping to gradually improve. Build up the miles by taking them easy. It's a process.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Christmas Week!
Spice, I agree Joe does an awesome job and adds so much to this thread that is why I think it's the most looked at thread. Have you noticed the amount of veiws this thread gets? With the calender, the map and everything else he brings to us we truely owe him a big hug!

Glueman, when training for a HM it's ok to have a run or two where you push your pace but if you'll look at plans most of them have recovery runs which are slow paced and Long Slow Distance runs which are slow. You'll see us refer to LSD runs this is what we're talking about. It's very important not to try to race yourself everytime you go out the door. You'll either get burned out or hurt. What I do is run my tempo run , fast pace, on tuesdays. This is normally 3 to 6 miles at 5 k pace or 10k pace for the 6 mile. Then Wensday is a slow start and I let the run come to me, meaning if I'm tight I run slow the whole way which is 5 to 7 miles if not I run slow to start with and pick up the pace as I go. Then I take a day of rest I run a nice easy pace 5 miles or so Friday and then my long run on Sunday. When I do my slow runs I want to be able to carry on a conversation without pantting. If I'm having trouble talking I'm running to fast. Most of my runs are done on hills so this makes a big difference on my friday run weather it's easy or hard, it's a recovery run 90% of the time. I'm actually training on my HM course or part of it anyway. The main thing to do when training is to listen to your body, if your sore go slowly on your run to work it out, if your hurtting rest. If your on top of the world fly!

Hope that helps some.

Joe I'm watching your Aggies. I seen the pep ralley clip. That guy got in big trouble from A&M, hats off to them for that. Think they said he got sent home for 3 days and reprimanded or something like that.

Spicegeek, I'm planning on comming to New York for Christmas next year, I've always wanted to be there at Christmas. One of our test Piolets is from there. He said I would love it.

Mike, I'm thinking of doing the Atlanta HM. I'm split between that one or one close to Destin beach here. Not sure yet.

Go Gators!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Christmas Week!
Hi all got 7.2 miles in tonight with DW at 9:12 pace. It was okay
22 degrees and breezy. The streets were quite clear after the 6" snow
fall last evening.

I have a question for the group. I'm up to about 40 mile per week and love it. During longer runs once I hit the 5 mile mark I feel strong until about 9 miles at that
point I am going to try some of the sport beans or gu. Where do you sort of hit the wall? Did you need anything at that point?

chuck - three pairs is the ticket.
I agree with your training schedule and not to worry about speed during
your base training. You have excellent advice.

Jp - you have great advice as well.

sheila - DW and I are going to decide which spring HM before the end of the year. If she runs then I will stay with her and not worry about my
time. I want her to enjoy it. I will then schedule another one right
after. The shuffle is great especially in the warmer weather as you
won't need an armband.

gluemanchu - welcome and yes your wife is
a fast runner. I'm using a modified Hal schedule with a higher base
mileage. The podcasts will work on any mp3. Get the Steve Runner
podcast 126 which goes though one runners explaination on why the base mileage is important.

spicegeek - great workout!!!!

take care all, tomorrow we will see what the weather brings and as always modify my mileage based on it.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Christmas Week!

So today I made a final push to get to the 650mi total for the year! Not a huge number... actually lower than last year, but it comes in the year when I started doing a lot of other things, including 885mi on the bike and 37,000 swimming yards. It was not easy this final run, as almost all day I helped a friend move to a new apartment.. and of course, Chris works out every day so he should do most of the heavy-lifting.

Now I should go watch the Giants-Patriots game... I'm a Jets fun, but considering how the Jets played this year, I should root for the other NJ team which has NY in its name. Plus, most Americans who are not descendants of the Mayflower pilgrims should be Giants fans tonight.

Just noticed... speaking of stars, I have three words for you: I AM LEGEND :-)

JP, regarding carrying the gels in a race, why worry about pins and tape, when you can carry them in your pockets?

Joe, the gyms here will be crowded for about 2-3 months, and then immediately we'll have a new crowd, the single guys and girls who are getting ready for beach season.. we're near the shore, so that's a big factor.

Wendy, careful with the Wii boxing... first time I played it, my back and shoulders were sore for 2 days.

Gluemanchu, welcome. I used Hal Higdon's plan for my first HMs and worked out fine. I love them, I used his for my marathons as well. Long runs should be done at a comfortable pace, so you should never be out of breath. As for the legs... the entire plan is to get them used to the distance, every time you extend the distance they'll be very tired and soon, as you move to longer distances they'll get more used to it. I remember the first time I ran 13 miles, I was exhausted... but then I ran 14 and 15, so at the first HM I didn't have issues with my legs.

Chuck, the regular thread started about when I was training for my first HM, which should be around the summer of 2005.

Runjr, I try not to hit the wall on training runs. On longer runs, I take a Gu every 40-45 minutes.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Christmas Week!

Hope not to confuse anyone, but in the switch from coolrunning to Active, my name switched to CHB1 where I was keeping my workouts. I am back to mara40thon

Kevee- As to when to "get that boost", the gel, and others recommend taking a supplement 45 minutes into a run, and every 45 minutes after that. I believe it has to do with how long it would take to need further nutrition. Hope this helps you in time for tomorrow. I hope to get 10 in tomorrow morning myself early enough to enjoy the 65 degree early morning temps.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Christmas Week!

hi all just watching football and reading a book. Decided to check in one more time for the evening. I see a ton of good runs today. the weather appears to be quite brisk across the country.

chris - impressive stats. Thanks for the gu tip. I'm feeling tired around the 9 mile range and looking for a boost at that point. I have never taken anything before but now I will begin as I getting to that HM distance for my long training run.

mara40thon - I like this screen name better. Thanks for the gel info. good luck on the 10 tomorrow.

Joe - Great weather ?:| At least for Wisconsin. Nice run today. I think the shot blox sound easier.

take care all and keep pushing!

I race in shorts and a singlet. Only one small pocket. I know there are shorts with all sorts of pockets, but I like to minimize things. Hence the pins, etc.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Christmas Week!

Chuck, That can't be right; you're running your tempo at race pace. I run a 20 minute tempo run (or shorter) at about 20 secs. slower than 5K pace. Faster than that and you get into a different type of workout, more towards an Interval (VO2max) workout. You don't want to do tempos too quickly because that defeats the purpose of the run, which is to get accustomed to running at your lactate threshold and thereby move that threshold up.

Otherwise I agree with what you say, especially listening to the body and giving it time to recover.
